Position Summary

The Child Neurology Disorders Division at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the Department of Neurology is seeking to recruit and train a Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical cares to and conduct research in persons with genetic disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training by child neurologists and other members of our multidisciplinary team to assess and oversee care of patients with neurogenetic disorders with the goal of independent assessment patients both for clinic and research assessments.
  • Genetic conditions will include working directly with patients with neurofibromatosis and other neurocutaneous disorders, in addition to those with rare genetic conditions causing developmental delays, autism and epilepsy.
  • Attend all of the educational activities of the division including but not limited to video rounds, CPC, journal clubs.
  • Coordinate the clinical practice of the neurogenetic clinics with the supervising faculty and its patients.
  • Provide support in guiding, shaping and overseeing scheduling and medical needs of patients while interacting closely with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Prescribe medication, equipment, write referrals, prepare letters of medical necessity, assist patients in their interactions with insurance providers, choose obtain and maintain equipment.
  • Trained to perform lumbar punctures, place intravenous lines, draw blood, and administer novel intrathecal and intravenous treatments to neurogenetic disorders patients.
  • Responsible for providing consultations to neurogenetic patients who may be inpatient as a part of their clinical trials or treatments. They will be required to attend inpatient family meeting as needed and may participate in transition care plans for patients with certain disorders.
  • Duties include overseeing preauthorization and prescription of precision genetic disorders treatments as well as follow-up to schedule test and obtain results.
  • Assist in execution of neurogenetic disorders clinical and research initiatives related to a number of diseases that include but not be limited to rare genetic disorders, neurofibromatosis, related skin, and central nervous system tumors
  • Work collaboratively with principal investigators and coordinators to oversee medical research needs and assist with procedures (including blood draws, infusions, and intrathecal injections) that may be required according to specific research protocols
  • Becoming familiar with maintaining compliance with existing policies and procedures at Columbia University, the IRB, FDA, NIH, and NYPH that relate to clinical research conducted at the movement disorders division in concert with study coordinators.
  • Responsible for assisting with grant writing and design for projects, data analysis, preparation of original articles for publication, or presentation at conferences.
  • Establish good rapport with patient and families as well as the clinical, research, and administrative teams.
  • Other related duties as assigned/required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's of Science in Nursing
  • 4 years of related experience
  • Current NP license in New York State

Preferred Qualifications

  • DNP preferred
  • Ability to work as part of a team; flexibility, and a positive attitude
  • Experience with neurological diseases preferred
  • Highly motivated, interested in movement disorders with excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good writing and communication skills are essential.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish preferred
  • Must be organized; attention to detail is required
  • Computer skills are required including proficiency with MS-Word, MS-Excel, Outlook, and MS-PowerPoint.
