The anticipated salary range for this role is between $143,000.00 and $185,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC Capital Markets, Inc. (CM) is a derivatives trading company based in New York City, with offices in Charlotte, NC, London and Hong Kong. SMBC CM is an established derivatives dealer with a broad product portfolio focused on interest rates and foreign exchange products such as rates & FX swaps, options & exotics as well as exchange traded products. SMBC Nikko Securities America, Inc. is a SEC-registered securities broker-dealer and member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB). These entities provide coordinated services to our corporate and institutional investor clients as part of the SMBC Global Markets business unit.

SMBC Global Markets is searching for a credit analyst to serve as subject matter expert for Hedge Funds while also providing coverage for other non-bank financial institutions. The role, Vice President level, reports to the Head of Credit Services within the Chief Operating Office of SMBC Global Markets front office. The role's primary function is to perform credit underwriting in support of our Global Markets investor business. The position is on the trading floor and the work environment is fast paced involving direct contact with front office staff, second line credit officers and our clients. The individual will support activities within our swap dealer and broker dealer businesses including derivatives, FX, repo and securities lending. As part of the first line of defense, the Credit Services Department maintains sound credit management activities liaising where necessary with other departments to review and assess credit risk, monitor credit exposure and provide guidance on credit limits in accordance with policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform credit analyses on hedge fund, asset managers, insurance companies and banks with emphasis on investment strategy, asset quality, leverage, liquidity, historical performance, portfolio exposures and risk control framework

  • Evaluate derivatives and securities financing transactions across client base working closely with derivatives marketers, relationship managers, risk management, credit department and legal to mitigate risk

  • Support negotiation of master agreements, identify policy exceptions and provide ongoing monitoring for termination events

  • Approve initial margin requirements

  • Provide continuous credit monitoring of assigned portfolio, ensure accuracy of assigned risk ratings and escalate any deterioration in credit quality to management

  • Maintain open relationship with customers via due diligence meetings and periodic updates on performance

  • Train, mentor and manage junior members of staff

  • Work on special projects as required

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS required with concentration in finance or business

  • 5-7 years of relevant credit work experience covering hedge funds, insurance, asset managers and financial institutions

  • Excellent understanding of derivatives and SFT product risk

  • Outstanding verbal & written communication skills, backed by strong analytics & attention to detail

  • Ability to operate independently, manage multiple simultaneous priorities and perform well under pressure in a demanding environment

  • Proficient in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
