Principal Financial Group MD - Head of Originations & Structuring, Private Infrastructure Debt in New York, New York

What You'll Do

Join Our Team as We Build Out Principal’s New Private Infrastructure Debt Platform! Are you a visionary leader with a deep understanding of infrastructure finance? As the MD - Head of Originations & Structuring, you’ll be responsible in lead the debt origination, sourcing, structuring and portfolio team within the Infrastructure Debt platform. This role will provide critical senior leadership and mentorship for the overall infrastructure business. The origination team will seek to focus on sourcing and underwriting investment grade and high yield infrastructure investments that suit client mandates. This position will include a global footprint with key jurisdictions including North America, Europe, Australia and Latin America. The candidate will be responsible for identifying and implementing strategy across core infrastructure sectors across all origination sourcing channels including Infrastructure Sponsors and Agents/Advisors. The candidate will also be responsible for talent development with direct reports to support origination activity. The role will collaborate closely will all Private Credit platforms and will report into the Head of Infrastructure Debt.

Lead & Develop a High-Performing Team:

  • Build and manage a team with strong origination capabilities to source and underwrite investment opportunities that align with our strategic goals and deliver financial returns for our clients.

  • Mentor and support your team in evaluating investment opportunities, providing recommendations based on our investment criteria and preliminary investment theses.

  • Leverage existing sponsor relationships and cultivate new ones to generate significant investment opportunities.

Strategic Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with prospective equity sponsors, infrastructure advisors, and investment bankers/agents.

  • Serve as a key member of the Credit Committee for Infrastructure Debt, leading the screening, underwriting, approvals, and closing processes for each financing opportunity.

  • Share knowledge and collaborate across our Private Credit platforms to enhance overall performance.

Drive & Expansion Efforts:

  • Support and expand our marketing initiatives, representing the firm at industry events, forums, and conferences.

  • Contribute to the growth of our infrastructure debt business, both internally and externally.

Leadership & Talent Development:

  • Attract, develop, and retain top-tier origination, underwriting, and portfolio management talent.

  • Lead and mentor the origination team, contributing to the overall management of the infrastructure debt business.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or CFA expected.

  • Strong credit capabilities with 15+ years of relevant infrastructure/project finance credit and originations experience with deep rooted credit structuring experience.

  • Proven sales and negotiation skills, with established relationships with senior members of leading infrastructure sponsors, agents, and advisors that include a history of sourcing a diverse set of attractive financing transactions.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of global market pricing and terms, with a creative and balanced approach to credit structuring and pricing.

  • Experience managing transaction teams, leading the execution from origination to closing.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in managing teams within the infrastructure and project finance origination markets.

  • Ability to maintain a calm, steady, patient approach to business while passionately competing for new business in a highly competitive environment.

  • Accepts and manages conflict and disagreement in a constructive and professional manner

  • Travel will be required.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$235000 - $319000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Location and Work Environments

We’re open to considering talent in the New Jersey / New York area. This role offers the ability to work hybrid for in-office and some remote. You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
