Overview

Do you love libraries and helping people, but find yourself more drawn to the business side of things? The New York Public Library has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. As part of the Library’s mission, the Office of Budget and Planning prepares and oversees the development and management of the Library's budgets, maintains multi-year financial plans, assists managers throughout the Library by providing analyses of the budgets for their units, and works with Development in the preparation of private and government funding proposals.

This Page position will give you excellent exposure to the Budget Office, and could help you decide if you want to begin a career in finance, budget and planning, or really any career involving financial analytical skills. We are looking for candidates that demonstrate a strong work ethic, are reliable, and possess solid written, verbal, and Excel skills.

You will also have access to the Library Page Fellowship Program as a Library Page; this is a career development program that empowers youth as they shape their careers. This Program provides resources to help develop career readiness skills, explore career goals, and provide on-the-job coaching, training, and mentorship.

The library page position is scheduled for 19 hours per week. Schedules are variable based on library needs and may be subject to change.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Budget Analyst, this Library Page will:

  • Help process budget amendments for all areas of the library, giving insight into a wide range of library needs and purchases;

  • Learn how to understand reports and perform certain tasks in Workday, our financial management platform;

  • Understand the budget check system and why transactions might fail budget check and be prevented from moving forward;

  • Help prepare journal entries, to move actual expenses from one part of the budget to another; and

  • Attend weekly Budget Staff meetings to understand the issues facing the team.

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Current enrollment in a degree program in accounting, finance, business, math, or economics at an accredited school.

  • Proper employment certificate for minors under 18 (https://www.labor.ny.gov/workerprotection/laborstandards/workprot/minors.shtm) as required by NYS law.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in an office environment using Microsoft Excel.

Required Skills

  • Basic computer and technology skills including Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and Google Applications

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow detailed instructions in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work with a team and take direction from multiple people

  • Superb interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills and basic curiosity

  • Demonstrated reliability and professionalism

  • Ability to interface well with Librarians, Curators, Specialists, and Administrative Assistants across the library as they request amendments or other information
