POSITION DETAILS

The ITAcademic Project Mgmt Director is primarily responsible for managing I.T. projects in support of the college’s academic mission and student-focused services. The position reports directly to the Deputy Chief Information Officer. The position leads a wide range of IT projects including the full lifecycle of systems and development initiatives through the application of project management tools and methodologies. The incumbent will work with IT leadership and other functional managers to initiate and drive projects and reach consensus on project scope and deliverables, documented in the project charter. The person will manage the project schedule, scope, issues, risks, resources, vendors assigned to projects, and serve as a Business Analyst. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Oversee the administration and maintenance of the College’s information technology infrastructure as it relates to ICIT projects; research, recommend, and approve College information technology related purchases; provide implementation support; develop current and future technology standards; evaluate and implement new technologies; and encourage innovation among technical staff in the utilization and implementation of ideas and techniques.

• Define project scope in collaboration with IT leadership, identify project team members’ roles, set performance expectations and responsibilities, allocate resources efficiently, facilitate change management activities and communications, manage interdependencies, perform quality checks and integration analyses, create, and maintain comprehensive policy and procedure documentation, escalate critical decisions, and report milestones.

• Determine and recommend equipment, material, and staffing needs for assigned operations and projects; coordinate purchases, and monitor and ensure adequate inventory levels of required supplies and equipment; prepare the submission of proposals, and detailed cost estimates with appropriate justifications; execute projects in accordance with agreed schedule, budget, and scope.

• Organize and direct meetings to discuss project goals and progress with project stakeholders including sponsors, steering committees, user community and team members to elicit requirements for projects; communicate timeline changes and share new information; quickly address issues and/or escalate to senior management when necessary; document project team meetings business requirements and/or technical solutions and designs; and track project changes

and adjust schedules as needed.

• Implementing IT strategies, conduct risk assessments for projects: facilitate problem-solving activities to define issues, assess current state root causes, design, and test solutions, identify, and remove process and operational roadblocks, and implement cohesive and integrated solutions leading to desired outcomes.

• Produce timely reports on variances to the approved project baseline and serve as the liaison for problem resolution and escalation; create workflow process diagrams, and implement milestone charts, dashboards and present reports and information updates as assigned by the Chief Technology Officer.

• Manage project-related coordination of testing; assist clients with preparation of User Acceptance Testing (UAT); assist clients with their roles in UAT, including ensuring scripts are reviewed, test cycles are scheduled, scripts are executed, and test results/defects are reported to project stakeholders and management, following-up to ensure defects are remediated; and perform initial test review of application before turning over to stakeholders; administer training activities, quality assurance reviews, and obtain change management approvals.

• Initiate and develop strategic collaborative projects with outside entities, including colleges, universities, nonprofit entities, and business organizations, using the platform of academic technology, distance education and professional development, which strengthen and enhance the work of the college.

• Serving as an internal consultant, provide input and support for new projects relating to information technology operations and systems.

• Perform special ad hoc requests, projects, initiatives, and other related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned, which may require travel to any of Hunter College’s locations and/or on-call support after standard business hours and/or weekends, as needed.

• Maintain documents that appear on PMO team apps/sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 5+ years of relevant experience required, with 3+ of those years serving in a Team Leadership

capacity.

• Knowledge and proficiency in system development life cycle (SDLC) methods and processes.

• Demonstrated ability in managing multiple, competing and sometimes conflicting priorities and

stakeholder expectations and requirements, to champion ideas and solutions, and multitasking

under tight deadlines.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, reflected in the ability to build exceptional rapport with university

stakeholders including unit staff, subject matter experts, technical staff, administrators, faculty and

students and to successfully form cooperative partnerships with both internal and external

stakeholders.

• Outstanding communication skills with the ability to facilitate group discussions and

communications and effectively articulate client’s needs, collaborate and lead presentations within

the management structure to diverse groups of technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Proficiency with all Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint, and a high

proficiency in Microsoft Project, or other industry standard project management software.

  • Provides expertise in a variety of technologies and equipment used to support academic instruction and/or research

  • Ensures quality customer service to all clients, particularly faculty and staff

  • Oversees installation, maintenance, and repairs of technical equipment

  • Evaluates usage, capacity, systems performance, and security considerations, and implements upgrades as required

  • Establishes operation and maintenance routines, manage day-to-day technical operations, and oversees assigned staff

  • May serve as Deputy to a Chief Information Officer or other technology executive

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
