The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director and Deputy Editor of Columbia College Today (CCT), the Assistant Editor is an integral part of the Editorial Team, which produces the College's alumni magazine, CCT, and develops content across College channels. The Editorial Team writes about students, faculty and alumni - whose interests, expertise and careers range widely - so this person must be comfortable with a variety of subjects, as well as with adapting their style and approach for different audiences. The Assistant Editor role is highly collaborative. This person reports, writes and edits articles, and works closely with partners to ensure those articles are complemented by appropriate visuals and then promoted effectively. The Assistant Editor also performs a variety of marketing and administrative duties. The ideal candidate is creative, adaptable, committed to excellence and attuned to their responsibilities in representing Columbia College to its many audiences.

Responsibilities

  • CCT EDITORIAL: Works closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor and Executive Editor to produce CCT, which publishes in print three times a year in addition to posting original online content. The assistant editor contributes ideas for print and online, and reports, writes and edits for both mediums. For the print magazine, the assistant editor manages the Lions (alumni profiles) section, which includes identifying potential subjects, reporting and writing articles, and coordinating imagery. The assistant editor writes other pieces as assigned; proofreads; handles photo research; fact checks as needed; and assists in Class Notes editing. This person also collaborates with the CCT art director on photography/illustration, and with the social media coordinator.
  • OVERALL EDITORIAL: Contributes ideas toward - and reports, writes and edits content for - Columbia College. This involves interviewing students and faculty, in person as well as over email, in addition to attending occasional events. Story types include including news announcements, Q&As, profiles, human interest pieces and more. The assistant editor arranges for imagery, as well as works with the social media coordinator (for example, by facilitating video creation or collaborating on original content for social). When appropriate, the assistant editor provides editing and proofreading support for internal and external communications, including but not limited to those produced by the Dean's Office and the Communications, Marketing, Editorial and Events Team.
  • MARKETING: Prepares the CCT newsletter that announces each issue, monitoring data and analytics, and adapting approach accordingly. Manages the annual donor drive with ongoing goals of cost efficiency and maximizing donor contributions. This includes tracking giving year over year; evaluating past practices and performance data; developing and executing annual campaign plan in coordination with the Editor-in-Chief and other partners; and working with Gift Systems to monitor progress and processing of donations.
  • OTHER: Manages CCT's bidding process for the press, Art Director and other vendors. Coordinates magazine advertising, including procuring ads from internal partners and external sources; ensuring timely delivery of ads; and coordinating placement with clients and designer. Manages CCT email box
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two to four years of related experience.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and communication skills essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with various computer systems and web-based applications, with ability to quickly acquire knowledge of University-specific systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a higher education and/or journalism setting preferred.
  • Photoshop and/or photography skills a plus.
