Position Summary/Description:

University of North Carolina History Department is seeking candidates for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Military History. The successful candidate will serve as the Research Fellow to develop historical and archival research concerning the more than 80,000 Americans still missing from military conflicts dating back to the 1940s, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf Wars, and other recent conflicts. The fellowship requires residency at the University of North Carolina. The fellow will work in the History Department and have access to university resources and services. Some travel for training and/or research will be required.

The DPAA Research Fellowship requires a time commitment of forty (40) hours per week on DPAA -related work and outreach activities. The Fellow will: 1. Utilize the scholarly resources of the University of North Carolina as well as external entities to conduct research and analysis to support DPAA’s ongoing mission to account for missing military personnel. 2. Support the Agency’s mission through conducting research and analysis that may include, but is not limited to, historical research and writing, data organization and management, digital humanities projects, GIS , foreign language translation, and public history work. 3. Provide regular written research reports and updates including oral presentations. 4. Adhere to all federal, DPAA , university, and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations. 5. Participate in the regular activities of the Department of History including offering public talks that capture the significance of the fellow’s research to the larger civilian and military communities. 6. If desired, teach one history class per calendar year. 7. Other duties as assigned.

The candidate for this position will need to meet and maintain information access requirements of the Department of Defense.
