Position Summary/Description:

The UNC School of Medicine is a national leader in biomedical research with more than $620M in total funding, and $343M in NIH grant funding. All basic science departments are ranked in the top 10, and 11 clinical departments ranking in the top 30 for NIH funding. The Office of Research (OoR) is led by the Vice Dean for Research and works with stakeholders within the SOM and across the University to maintain and expand the research infrastructure necessary to support continued growth and innovation in our research portfolio. The Associate Director of the OoR works directly with the OoR Senior Director and the Vice Dean for Research to support this mission, serving as a central resource for information and assistance related to research in the School of Medicine, with a focus on facilitating interdisciplinary science and collaborative research efforts. These efforts include review and administration of SOM strategic pilot and other funding programs; promotion of strategic interdisciplinary research groups; coordination of resources to support grant applications and support for training grant proposals; communication with the research community; and organization of research symposia and workshops. The Associate Director will work directly with the OoR Senior Director to develop and implement these and other strategic initiatives.

Education and Experience:

Applicants should leverage a broad-based biomedical knowledge base and a familiarity with grant writing and the processes involved in academic research to be successful in this role. This includes: research infrastructure needs; research academic structures and organization; research funding, grant sources, awards, and contracts; the process of proposal development and research methods. Maturity, tact, and excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

Essential Skills:

PhD in the biomedical or life sciences.
