Vanderbilt University Research Technician-Term in Nashville, Tennessee

The Mechanisms of Addiction and Psychopathology Laboratory (MAP Lab) directed by Dr. Ashley L. Watts in the Department of Psychology at Vanderbilt University seeks applicants for a research technician position. The Term Research Technician will report directly to the MAP Lab’s Director and will assist with the day-to-day functions of the laboratory, serve as the key point of contact, and will contribute to the analysis of data and writing of scientific manuscripts. More specifically, the Term Research Technician will help the lab’s multiple ongoing research projects and activities; ordering laboratory supplies and equipment; format, edit, maintain, and update protocols, standard operating procedures, and lab manuals; participate in data collection as needed; maintain the lab organized and in good operating conditions; assist in the effective operations of the lab; train students in the methods used in the lab; schedule procedures and keep a laboratory calendar; communicate with research participants, students, and other staff to keep the Lab Director informed of important information; assist the Lab Director in lab-related administrative duties.

About the Work Unit:

The Department of Psychology in the College of Arts & Science has faculty (both tenure and non-tenure lines) who are aligned within three specializations: clinical psychology, cognition and cognitive neuroscience, and neuroscience. We are first and foremost a research-oriented department, and our faculty comprises nationally and internationally recognized scholars in their fields of research.

Our Undergraduate Program currently consists of nearly 160 undergraduate majors. Our approximately 40 Ph.D. students in the Department’s Graduate Program will join, upon graduation, alumni employed in public and private institutions and organizations, as well as in private practice.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to data analysis of existing, secondary data and the preparation of scientific manuscripts.

  2. Maintain lab protocols and update them as necessary.

  3. Facilitate and participate in data collection as needed.

  4. Ensures that the lab director is kept apprised of all relevant lab activities, issues, and potential concerns.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Education and Certifications:

A Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution of higher education is necessary

Qualifications:

At least one year of relevant research experience is necessary.

The ability to communicate and work with a large number of people is necessary.

Computer skills to be used in business transactions (i.e. expense reports, spreadsheets, documents) are necessary.

Experience as a problem solver, self-starter, excellent communication, and responsibility is necessary.

NOTE: A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment.
