The Latin American, Iberian, and Latinx Studies Librarian and Curator works with a team of subject librarians across nine campus libraries and supports the research and teaching mission of Vanderbilt’s College of Arts and Science. This individual will engage in outreach, instruction, and personalized research support for students and scholars across the disciplines and will partner with faculty, students, and staff to support discipline-related teaching and research throughout the university. The Librarian and Curator will be the primary liaison for the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (CLACX), the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Latin American focused programs in Anthropology and History, and other affiliated campus projects such as the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) and the Slave Societies Digital Archive (SSDA).

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University comprises nine libraries, as well as service departments in collections services, digital scholarship & scholarly communications, information technology and digital services, and teaching & learning. We collect, preserve and make accessible a wide variety of resources, we partner with faculty and students to shape research and teaching, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develops and manages collections to support research and instruction in Latin American, Caribbean, Iberian and Latinx Studies by formulating policies and selecting materials in relevant formats and languages; monitoring and reviewing gifts; managing the materials budgets including endowment funds.

• Partners with campus librarians in student-centered digital literacy instruction.

• Serves as the primary liaison for the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (CLACX), the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese, as well as for area relevant courses and faculty researchin Anthropology, History, Latinx Studies and affiliated campus projects such as LAPOP.

• Actively engages with the faculty and students in all learning, teaching, and research contexts, whether physically located on campus or virtually based.

• Identifies and develops outreach and engagement events that are aligned with campus strategic initiatives.

• Seek opportunities for collaboration around teaching and research, in particular with campus partners and/or library colleagues on grant-funded initiatives or projects.

• Represents the library locally, nationally, and internationally in relevant professional associations, such as SALALM and LASA.

• Actively contributes to the profession in the areas of Latin American, Iberian, and Latinx Studies, area studies librarianship, information literacy, pedagogy (digital and otherwise), among other areas of scholarly interest in the Latin American, Iberian, and Latinx Studies, while also keeping abreast of the latest developments in these areas and other related trends in academic librarian

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited Institution or terminal degree in another relevant discipline is required.

• Advanced degree in Latin American Studies-related field is preferred.

• At least five years of related professional experience is necessary.

• Deep interdisciplinary knowledge of Latin American and Iberian Studies as demonstrated through advanced disciplinary or area studies coursework or degree is necessary.

• Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish, and basic familiarity with Portuguese is necessary.

• Experience providing public service and/or research support preferred.

• Experience teaching in higher education institutions preferred.

• Experience delivering instructional programming preferred.

• Experience building research collections in a library setting preferred.

• Outreach experience preferred.
