This is a professional position responsible for assisting faculty with forestry, geospatial science, and environmental science research project implementation and field data collection in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture ( ATCFA ). Assists with maintaining and piloting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and acquiring, processing, and managing UAV data. Responsible for supporting forest management and college instruction efforts as appropriate. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Research Associate.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assists with forest resources and other natural resources-related research projects, including field data collection and analysis.

  2. Provides assistance with forest land management.

  3. Maintains and pilots UAVs and sensors.

  4. Acquires remote sensing data with UAV for research and forestland management applications. Processes and manages acquired data.

  5. Provides assistance with classroom and laboratory instruction.

  6. Answers and/or refers questions regarding the operations, products, and services of the college as appropriate.

  7. Supervises student research assistant(s), research technician(s), and contractors providing research data collection or other services.

  8. Provides occasional assistance in handling routine supervisory, administrative, and clerical duties.

  9. Assists with the preparation of reports, scientific papers, publications, and presentations. Presents oral presentations of research findings associated with college activities at various local, state, national, and international meetings, conferences, and symposia.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  10. May be required to work evenings, nights, and weekends.

  11. May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies.

  3. Knowledge of UAVs, geographic information systems ( GIS ), remote sensing, natural resource management and research practices.

  4. Skill in operating UAVs and applicable forest and natural resources research equipment and tools including data collection equipment, forest measurement tools, herbicide application equipment, chainsaws, and other equipment.

  5. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation, statistical analysis (R or SAS ), ESRI ArcGIS, remote sensing, and GPS software.

  6. Skill in field collection of research quality natural resources-related data.

  7. Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data.

  8. Skill in completing assignments accurately with attention to detail.

  9. Ability to quickly learn operation of scientific equipment and piloting of new UAVs and master new technologies.

  10. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  11. Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  12. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.

  13. Ability to train and supervise others.

  14. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  15. Ability to travel for data collection, research, and attendance at professional meetings.

  16. Ability to obtain a FAA UAV 107 pilot license within six months of employment.

  17. Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas driver’s license to operate university vehicles.

  18. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.

    Physical Demands

Physical ability to perform essential job functions, recognizing position requires regular field work in forested environments, often in remote areas and rough terrain. Ability to stand up for more than an hour at a time, sit for more than an hour at a time, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, lift up to 50 pounds, talk, hear, and drive university vehicles as well as close vision and peripheral vision. Field work is performed in varying environmental conditions including but not limited to precipitation, high and low temperature extremes, and wind.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in forestry, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science, geospatial science or a related field is required.

Required Experience and Training

Two years of related experience is required. Experience in UAV operation and GIS is required. FAA UAV 107 pilot license is required within six months of employment. Additional education may substitute for experience on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree is preferred. Experience in forestry, geospatial science, environmental science or other related field research project implementation, data collection, and statistical analysis is preferred. Experience in forest management, natural resources inventory, remote sensing, and supervision of silvicultural operations is preferred. Forester certification is preferred.

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
