Shrub Oak International School Training Specialist in Mohegan Lake, New York

Under the direction of the Director of Research and Staff Development, with strong collaboration with all departments, the Training Specialist will be responsible for designing and implementing Shrub Oak International School’s staff development trainings and workshops into a robust learning program across the organization. He/she will build and transform staff development and learning into a function that engages staff via appropriate learning vehicles (online, blended, live) and translates key learning deliverables, to actionable on-the-job student engagement for further coaching as needed.

The Training Specialist will work collaboratively with the Director of Research and Staff Development and additional Training Specialists to design or assist in the creation of robust learning agendas, and training content, and have the demonstrated expertise to deliver (or co-deliver) content to adult learners in an engaging, experiential manner. The Training Specialist will assist the Research and Staff Development department in the design of feedback systems and data collection to ensure approaches are state of the art and meet Shrub Oak’s evolving needs. Additionally, they will complete live ‘on the floor’ observations and mentoring to ensure the training and staff competency is being upheld while staff engage with our students. Having access to confidential information, discretion, and independent judgment is required.

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position:

Reporting to the Director of Research and Staff Development, the Training Specialist will be responsible and accountable for:

 

Roles Primary Duties

Design and implement robust training programs across all departments at Shrub Oak International School

  • Assist in the design and implementation of robust training that will enable staff at SOIS to provide a regulating and engaged learning environment for students

  • Designs creative learning opportunities that flexibly meet the needs of a 24/7/365 organization and uses appropriate learning vehicles to reach learners

  • Provides ongoing feedback aligned to training objectives in real time to staff

  • Retrains staff in all aspects of training as needed

  • Delivers TCIS training, including refreshers, to new and existing staff on a regular basis

  • Delivers regular on the floor development to student facing staff

    Collaborates with Director of Research and Staff Development and Department Heads and their designees

  • Make recommendations to align overall training and development strategy into actionable training plans for SOIS

  • Remain current on new learning and other industry approaches to remain at the forefront of adult learning theory

  • Supports performance improvement plans in all departments through ongoing training

    Grows Development Coaches

  • Provides weekly reflective supervision to Development Coach caseload

  • Provides on the floor coaching to Development coach caseload

  • Organizes and implements weekly Development Coach department meeting

    Collects, reviews, and analyzes performance metrics that support continuous learning and improvement

  • Provide recommendations to enhance learning and development

  • Reviews and analyzes data to inform function of training department across all programs

  • Makes recommendations to Director of Research and Staff Development based on data analysis

    Required Skills – Competencies – Qualifications:

  • High emotional intelligence and exceptional communications skills (both oral and written) to read, understand and engage a wide range of learners at all levels of the organization

  • Demonstrated customer service skills, with an ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse, transdisciplinary group of individuals at all levels of the organization, with the ability to influence and collaborate with others at all levels

  • Experience evaluating learning programs and materials to ensure learner needs are met

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing projects to successful and timely conclusion

  • Ability to work with all stakeholders in a collaborative manner as appropriate

    Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in special education or a specific clinical domain (mental health, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, physical therapy, etc.) preferred. Bachelors degree considered.

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with autistic individuals in a residential setting

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience utilizing crisis management systems (CPI, SCIP-R, TCI, etc.). Experience as a crisis trainer a plus.

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in coaching others in 1:1 and in small or large group setting to provide positive and constructive feedback to staff

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in the design and engaged delivery of experiential content across multiple platforms (live, hybrid, e-learning etc.) with an understanding of adult learning theory, in a wide variety of areas, including but not limited to, empowering, and supporting autistic individuals or those with developmental disabilities, safety, human resources

    Physical Demands

    Workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines, and time pressures; Work regularly requires sustained concentration. Sitting at a desk for extended periods, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors) as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a year-round position. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week, which may flex to after traditional hours or weekends given the nature of our work. Ideal hours are 12-8, four days during the work week, with one weekend shift. However, the demanding nature of our profession will regularly require professional employees to work longer hours than regular hours of operation.

Salary: $80,000/yr
