The candidate will commission and operate the Total-Coverage Ultra-fast Response to Binary-Mergers Observatory (TURBO) led by the PI in New Mexico and Crete. They will also use the facility to acquire and publish observations. The successful candidate will also be responsible for commissioning and operation of Mount Lemmon Observing Facility (MLOF), as well as carrying out research using MLOF. These are each substantial research facilities, and operation will require solving complex problems in software and potentially in hardware. They will work to improve efficiency and reliability of operation. The facilities provide unique capabilities for addressing key outstanding issues in astronomy. When operational, TURBO will be able to discover supernovae within minutes of explosion, which will open a new window into the nature of their progenitors and explosion physics. By rapidly searches wide areas of the sky for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events, TURBO will be able to identify the distance to the explosion, enabling measurement of the cosmic expansion rate and constraints on elemental synthesis following neutron star mergers. MLOF can be triggered to provide high signal-to-noise observations across a wider wavelength range. The candidate will serve as an expert resource to lab member and collaborators, and instruct and advise new personnel about the software pipelines. Job Duties 40% Commissioning of MLOF, acquisition of data, and publication of papers using data. Development of software to automate telescope operation, and coordination of data collection. The contract with the Aerospace Corporation (Air Force) includes funding for the robotic upgrade and operation of the facility, and the candidate is needed to commission the capability. The candidate will use the facility to follow up transients (e.g., supernovae, GRBs, kilonovae), and prepare publications. 40% Commissioning of TURBO and operation. Optimization of pipeline, scheduling, data analysis.
