The Minnesota Veterans Home - Minneapolis has a full-time, day shift opening for a Painter position. As a Painter, you will perform wall repair, drywall taping/finishing, tile repair, and general painting activities on both new and historic buildings. Work includes, but is not limited to, the interiors and exteriors of buildings, machinery, and equipment.

The Minneapolis Home is located on Minnehaha Avenue, which has connecting highways and public transportation options for an easy commute. The beautiful 53-acre wooded campus includes mature oaks and pines, nature trails and biking paths overlooking the Mississippi River.

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position.

To qualify, one of the three following requirements must be met:

  • Approved apprenticeship (6000 hours) in painting; OR

  • Three (3) years of experience as a painter, including commercial or residential work preparing and painting a variety of surfaces; OR

  • One (1) school year of a vocational or trade school painting program AND two (2) years of experience as a painter as described below.

Qualifying painting experience includes the following:

  • Knowledge of standard painting practices, techniques, materials and tools sufficient to requisition and select supplies and material, and apply them to complete painting and decorating projects.

  • Knowledge of construction plans and painting specifications sufficient to interpret, modify, and follow them to complete painting and decorating projects.

  • Knowledge of shop math sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.

  • Skill in using hand tools (e.g. brushes, rollers, scrapers) and power equipment (e.g. spray guns, sanders) sufficient to prepare, cover and decorate interior and exterior surfaces of State buildings, structures, woodwork, and furniture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience as a painter, including commercial or residential work preparing and painting a variety of surfaces.

Additional Requirements

This position requires successful completion of the following:

  • Employment reference checks will be conducted on finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance and contact with the applicant's former employer(s).

  • A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.

  • A Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check will be conducted on finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
