The Nurse Educator is responsible for providing nursing professional development and education services in order to prepare the nursing staff to perform their job roles at the practice, and then continuous support, to ensure their acquiring the knowledge and skills so that they may competently function in their designated roles. Under the guidance of the Director of Education & VP of Nursing, the Nurse Educator collaborates with nursing management and staff across departments to assess, plan, develop, implement, facilitate, evaluate and revise educational programming for all levels of nursing personnel. The Nurse Educator acts as a key resource in the orientation and continuing education of nursing staff at the practice. The Nurse Educator implements a comprehensive education program for clinical staff that include, but are not limited to orientation, continuing education and in-services. Educational programming is provided both in the classroom and within the clinical setting.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates competence in core RN skills and competencies

  • Knowledgeable of State board of nursing scope of practice for RNs, LPNs and MAs

  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of practice operations, clinical and non-clinical workflows, processes and procedures

  • Orients nursing staff to their job responsibilities using an evidence-based approach, ensuring the congruence with the mission and goals of the Practice and National Patient Safety Goals

  • Oversees new nursing orientation, schedules, and assigning preceptors

  • Provides Nursing preceptors with a preceptor orientation and ongoing training. Maintains documentation of attendance to preceptor training classes

  • Responsible for EMR training, including nursing documentation requirements i.e., templates, phone messages and medication reconciliation

  • Assists with the development and execution of EMR training for new clinical users and for upgrades and enhancements to the practice systems and applications

  • Participates as a core team member for the EPIC implementation and ongoing support for the software

  • Credentialed EPIC trainer, supports all aspects EPIC training as part of a core training group

  • Assists with development plans and staff remediation as necessary both in the classroom and in the clinical setting

  • Provides EHR remediation training as requested by clinical leadership

  • Assists staff with new procedures as needed both in the classroom and in the clinical setting

  • Demonstrates an understanding of OSHA requirements in the office setting and safety features provided for the staff

  • Teaches Blood Borne Pathogens, hand hygiene and sharps safety to all staff

  • Involved in Quality Improvement activities in order to assist in monitoring performance indicators and improving compliance with policies and procedures. Including the development and deployment of training initiatives

  • Functions as a designated resource person for issues pertaining to nursing issues, work flow and productivity within the Practice

  • Conducts on-going need assessments of the nursing staff, assesses those needs and develops, coordinates and implements training programs and appropriate competencies based on policy and scope of practice

  • Develops, organizes and executes educational sessions for nursing staff in relation to the initiatives and plans of the practice

  • Maintains documentation describing content of training programs and staff attendance

  • Implements an evaluation and follow up in order to measure the effectiveness of training

  • Addresses the needs of current nursing staff when formal training is not needed

  • Communicates with the VP of Nursing, Directors of Nursing, Nursing supervisors and Director of Education all teaching plans and problems identified in the appropriate office site

  • Meets monthly will Nursing Supervisors to access training needs for the clinical staff

  • Attends Nurse Practice meetings or accesses meeting minutes for review and share information with the Education Department team members

  • Guides the Lead Clinical preceptors. Meets with the LCPs monthly and assigns the group training initiatives to roll out across the practice

  • Attends monthly Medical Home meetings for both Primary Care and Pediatrics or accesses meeting minutes for review

  • Attends monthly Practice redesign meeting or accesses meeting minutes for review

  • Assists with coordination of in-service education with vendors when new equipment is purchased

  • Reviews nursing competency forms yearly for updates and revisions

  • Develops procedures and competencies for use of new equipment

  • Tracks and monitors compliance with Nursing Annual Education assignments

  • Participates in AAAHC Survey.Responsibilities include, but not limited to preparing nursing education files, meeting with the surveyors for file review and discussion

  • Administrative user of HealthStream and HeartCode Program

  • Facilitates BLS, ACLS and PALS renewals for providers and nursing utilizing HealthStream. Assigns coursework and completes skill review for certification

  • Participates in site visits to all locations and provides clinical education and support to help align the staff to practice policy

  • Provides leadership training/mentoring to recently promoted nursing staff

  • Knowledgeable of various consent forms

  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of Practice Health and Safety program

  • Participation in Annual Patient Safety Assessments by conducting surveys and supporting education initiatives that arise due to assessment results

  • Responds to and assists Physicians with in-office emergencies as needed

  • Maintains a working relationship and open lines of communication with Physicians and staff

  • Reports patient safety issues/concerns and documents appropriately

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of all appropriate medical equipment

  • Frequent contact/interaction with nursing staff, patients, and physicians on a daily basis

  • Work is generally active, predominantly standing and walking

  • May occasionally be required to lift patients

  • Usual medical office environment

  • Work area may be noisy and stressful

  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids, hazardous chemicals, odors and communicable diseases

Required Qualifications:

  • RN with current New York State License

  • 5+ years of clinical and education experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSN

  • 2+ years of clinical and education experience within Crystal Run Healthcare

  • Possess excellent communication and computer skills

  • Possess an understanding of the job functions for the different levels of nursing responsibility

New York Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $70,200 to $137,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
