CiTi BOCES Career & Technical Education (CTE) Instructor – Fire/EMS in Mexico, New York
The Career & Technical Education (CTE) Instructor for Fire/EMS is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in fire science and emergency medical services to high school students. This role involves developing and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for careers in firefighting and emergency medical services. The instructor will facilitate hands-on training, simulations, and real-world scenarios to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge required in the career field. Additionally, the instructor will support students in achieving industry certifications and post- graduation success.
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development and Instruction:
Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum in Fire Science and Emergency Medical Services, adhering to New York State Education Department (NYSED) standards & International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) standards.
Collaborative planning & teaching with Law Enforcement Instructor
Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons that incorporate practical, hands-on training, simulations, and real-world scenarios.
Utilize various teaching methodologies and technologies to address diverse learning styles and needs.
Student Assessment and Support:
Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments.
Provide constructive feedback and support to help students achieve academic and technical proficiency.
Maintain accurate records of student progress and achievements.
Classroom and Training Environment Management:
Ensure a safe, orderly, and inclusive learning environment.
Manage and maintain classroom, training equipment, supplies, and facilities.
Oversee student conduct and enforce discipline in accordance with school policies.
Industry and Community Engagement:
Establish and maintain partnerships with local fire departments, EMS agencies, and post-secondary institutions.
Coordinate field trips, guest speakers, and real-world learning opportunities to enhance the curriculum.
Serve as a liaison between the school and the broader fire/EMS community.
Advisory Role:
Advise and mentor students on career pathways, further education, and industry certifications.
Support students in participating in related student organizations and competitions.
Participate in school-wide events, initiatives, and committees to support the overall mission of CiTi BOCES & CTE.
Attend & participate in CTE Advisory.
Participate in NYSED CTE Program reapproval & all its components.
Job Qualifications
Certification: Valid New York State teacher’s certification in Fire/EMS Education (or ability & willingness to obtain certification). Professional certifications in firefighting and EMS (e.g., Firefighter I/II, EMT, Paramedic) are highly desirable.
Credentialed as a NYS Fire Instructor I, or EMT Instructor
Credentialed as a CPR Instructor - must be from an accredited vendor such as: Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc.
Experience: Prior teaching experience in a secondary education setting preferred. Practical experience in firefighting and/or emergency medical services is highly desirable.
Industry-related work experience, 5 years + preferred
Education: preferred Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or a related field.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, and related technologies.
Excellent instructional and classroom management skills.
Ability to engage and inspire high school students.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Competence in using educational technology and digital resources.
Physical Demands:
Ability to conduct physical training and manage firefighting and EMS equipment.
Capability to lift and move supplies and equipment as needed.
Work Environment:
Combination of classroom, training facilities, and outdoor environments.
Occasional travel for field trips, professional development, and community engagement activities.
