Reporting to the Information Technology Superintendent, the Communications Technician is responsible for maintaining and installing radios, repeaters, modems, fiber, copper (CAT), coaxial cable, radio antennas and security cameras safely and in accordance with Baffinland safety procedures. This includes pulling cables, crimping of connectors, testing and cutting of antennas and troubleshooting. This role is based at our Mary River mine in Nunavut on a 3X3 rotation.

Main Accountabilities

•Install, configure, and maintain mobile and base station radios (analog and digital) and maintain inventory.

• Install repeaters in communication towers, including coaxial cabling, for the operation of the radio trunking system.

• Maintain radio equipment by performing basic repairs to ensure proper operation.

• Install and maintain modem (Cradle Point and Sierra) and maintain inventory to provide communications across the cellular network.

• Maintain communication network by installing various types of cables such as coaxial and twisted pair.

• Install fiber optic cables to maintain and expand the existing network infrastructure. This includes fiber splicing, testing and termination.

• Install and configure cameras throughout the site offices and field.

• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot the Mining Fleet management system in order to track vehicles locations and operating parameters.

• Participate in projects such as communications tower installation by providing work direction to contractors, ensuring that work is performed safely, and delivered within timelines.

Main Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and / or a Diploma from a vocational institution in Telecommunication Technology

  • Minimum three (3) of experience as a Communication Technician including installing and maintaining communication equipment

  • Ability to operate equipment (Man Lift, Skid Steer and Boom Truck) is an asset

  • Ability to identify and prioritize customer needs and recognise constraints, adopt a professional approach to customers, and seek to provide a better service. Is reliable and delivers on promises.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal, for conveying ideas, instructions, and information to colleagues, external parties, and superiors.

  • Ability to influence the views and behaviour of others through persuasion and encouragement and manage conflict or other sensitive issues tactfully and effectively. Ability to adapt behaviour to a wide range of people.

  • Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure that work is completed effectively and deadlines are met.

  • Ability to actively participate in a team, encourage co-operation, and be aware of the needs of others. Ability to share information and support other team members, and prioritise team goals over individual goals.

  • Ability to define a problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and reach logical conclusions, and decide on appropriate plan of action.

  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions. Ability to think critically, have attention to detail, and the capacity to make informed judgments based on available information.

  • Knowledge of digital tools and technology. Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to lift and transport moderately heavy objects such as repeaters, antenna’s and other communication equipment

  • Ability to demonstrate awareness and commitment to health, community and environmental protection and take action to ensure that unsafe practices or non-compliant behaviors do not occur
