Lab Technician

Job Overview

Quality control of asphalt mixes and pit materials.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Quality Control for bituminous plant mix properties.

  • Split samples with owner representatives.

  • Perform chemical extractions on various bituminous mixes.

  • Collect samples from the work site (pit or bituminous).

  • Perform extraction and gradation tests on various bituminous mixes.

  • Perform gyratory testing of bituminous mixes.

  • Prepare Mix Design Reports (MDR) and Job Mix Formulas (JMF).

  • Perform gradation testing for pit materials.

  • Communicate with project representatives.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed.

    Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Highschool or GED preferred

  • MnDOT certified Bituminous Plant ll

  • Microsoft Excel proficiency

    Work Environment

  • Primarily laboratory and construction site work environments. The laboratory environment contains various chemicals, levels of heat, and asphalt material. Construction work is conducted on rough terrain. There is constant exposure to various weather conditions typically in the states where the work is performed, including loud noise, hot items, dust, and other materials. The work environment is in areas where heavy equipment, power tools and traffic are present. There is exposure to heights up to 50 feet and depths of up to 80 feet in this construction environment.

    Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand (70-80% required on feet), walk, sit, use hands to input information, handle, carry (with and without assistance), feel objects, tools (of varying size and weight), or controls. The employee must be able to lift (including above shoulder or head), move, and carry up to 50 pounds frequently, (field/laboratory samples and equipment). Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
