JOB SUMMARY:

A Phlebotomist serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures. The job of a phlebotomist is a rewarding one, since you help people stay healthy and even help save their lives. One of the most important phlebotomist job duties is to properly identify patients and correctly use phlebotomy methods (e.g. venipuncture, skin puncture). We’ll rely on you to preserve patient health and quality of samples.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma

  • Knowledge of computer systems

  • Experience in performing venipunctures and capillary punctures for blood collection.

  • ASCP Certification or equivalent recommended at time of employment. Certification required after working 3000 hours.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs/quality assurance, safety, environment of care, management of information, and infection control standards.

  • Performs patient phlebotomy which includes:

  • Prioritizes specimen collections, i.e., stat, routine and today.

  • Assures proper patient and sample identification.

  • Draws appropriate samples in correct volumes and in correct tubes on all patients and makes adjustments in collection procedure according to age, and any limiting factors such as physical, mental or speech impairments.

  • Performs specialized phlebotomy procedures such as handling temperature sensitive specimens, glucose tolerance tests, blood cultures, and therapeutic phlebotomy.

  • Practices proper infection control techniques to avoid cross-contamination of patients and self.

  • Assists nursing units with specimen collections from IV sites or specialized catheters.

  • Represents the laboratory in a courteous, polite and positive manner in dealing with:

  • All hospital staff

  • Customers

  • Family members

  • Visitors

  • Assists with training new laboratory employees on phlebotomy and necessary clerical duties to insure proper functioning of the lab.

  • Performs necessary clerical duties.

  • Performs specimen ascession duties such as:

  • Centrifugation and aliquoting specimens.

  • Refrigerate and/or freeze as required.

  • Routes specimens to proper sections of the lab.

  • Prepares specimens for shipment to reference labs.

  • Maintains cleanliness of physical facility and restocks all trays, and drawers with drawing supplies.

  • Process supply orders and distributes/stocks supplies when received.

  • Performs routine tasks in a specific section which do not involve subjective interpretation relating to patient test results.

  • Attends departmental meetings and annual inservice education days.

  • Demonstrates appropriateness in meeting objectives in age-specifics.

  • Collection and handling of DOT drug screening specimens, chain of custody forms, packaging and transportation to appropriate places for shipment.

  • Attends departmental meetings, infection control meetings and annual in-service education days.

  • Can work independently or as part of a team.

  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times.

  • Maintain proper work ethics respecting patient confidentiality.

  • Maintain a positive/effective working relationship with others.
