Deputy Commissioner- Department of Public SafetyThe Town of North Hempstead seeks a public safety professional with education and experience to serve as the Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Public Safety. The Deputy Commissioner will be involved in all phases of operations of the Department and will report directly to the Commissioner.Job Description:•Assist in the administration of an approximately $3.9 million annual operating budget•Directly manage the Animal Shelter, Harbor Patrol, Emergency Management and Port Washington Parking District.•Issue Notices of Violation and Court Appearance Tickets and appear in Court to testify to assist Town prosecution.•Administer the Town's Animal Shelter, enforcing local and State animal protection, control and licensing laws, and administering Town dog control services.•Work with the Emergency Management Director to coordinate the Town's response to hurricanes, nor'easters, other severe weather conditions, and non-weather related catastrophes (including terrorist attacks).•Manage the operation and control of the Town’s Bay Constables, who oversees the placement of moorings in Town waters, performs marine patrol duties, and enforces codes and ordinance relating to boating safety.•Work within the Collective Bargaining Agreement of the Civil Service Employees Association. Generate compliance reporting for Comptroller’s Office and local, state and federal agencies.Minimum Qualification Requirements:1.A baccalaureate degree from a nationally accredited college or university.2.Ten years’ experience as a first responder, in a leadership role.3.Experience in writing Hazard Mitigation Plans, Comprehensive Emergency Management Plansand Reports.4.Understands rules and regulations concerning water and boater safety.5.Experience with FEMA and Recovery Operations.All candidates must possess a NYS driver license. Candidates should have excellent demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, be able to speak in public and have a strong knowledge of industry standards.Excellent benefits, including health/dental/vision plan, NYS retirement system, and generous vacation and leave.
