Job Summary

The Staff Instructor conducts training with basic & advanced law enforcement cadets. The training ranges from classroom instruction to practical skills training at both onsite and offsite facilities. The Staff Instructor travels throughout the state conducting basic and continuing education classes for law enforcement agencies. This training requirement is set forth by the Mississippi Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (MS BLEOST). The Staff Instructor ensures training maintains compliance with all MS BLEOST guidelines.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary instructor for law enforcement skills training and education in an academy setting

  • Supervises, provides mentorship, and directs mentor activities and special activities for basic class cadets entering the law enforcement career field

  • Travel throughout the state of Mississippi, as needed, to teach law enforcement agencies on various subjects for basic and continuing education requirements as set forth by the Mississippi Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (MSBLEOST)

  • Maintain routine maintenance on all SRPSI vehicles, to include fuel and mileage logs in each vehicle

  • Maintain and service training equipment and resupply training aids in support of all basic and advanced training.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institute of higher learning AND 2 years of certified law enforcement experience OR 8 years of certified law enforcement experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience is a requirement for this position. Education and/or experience must be in a field directly related to law enforcement. Certified law enforcement officer within last 2 years. Minimum of 3 years Law Enforcement Patrol experience. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is also a requirement for this position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the modern principles, practices and methods of police training, organization and operations

  • Functional knowledge of law enforcement firearms, tactics, and defensive tactics

  • Considerable knowledge of modern methodologies and techniques in adult learning

  • Must maintain acceptable level of physical fitness to meet training requirements and standards.

  • Ability to convey information clearly and effectively.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in teaching methods and instructional techniques.

  • Capability to design and implement lesson plans and educational activities.

  • Familiarity with educational technology and online teaching platforms.

  • Ability to use multimedia tools for enhancing learning experiences.

  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and support student progress.

  • Ability to plan and organize lessons, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.

  • Skills in setting and achieving instructional goals and objectives.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Law Enforcement Instructor through MSBLEOST. Minimum of 3 years Law Enforcement Instructor experience. Experience and instructor certification in at least 2 of the following skills: law enforcement driving, tactics defensive tactics, impact weapons, OC spray, firearms, physical training, CPR/1st Aid, Radar/Lidar, or Taser.
