What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated and team oriented individual to join the Handling Gear (H-Gear) Department and support the 928 H-Gear Lab. The role will support the lab lead with operations and logistics (scheduling, safety, equipment maintenance, etc.), and support the H-Gear engineers with various assemblies and tests. The candidate should have experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment, demonstrated commitment to safety and strong verbal and written communication.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assist with hardware assembly and part modification

  • Support test activities

  • Support procurement activities

  • Support lab safety, equipment acquisitions/maintenance, facility modernizations, purchases, logistics etc.

Due to the nature of the job, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$71,800 - $138,200

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Requires high school diploma plus three or more years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • If offered the position, you may be required to demonstrate your fitness to perform certain physical aspects of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance and Sigma 15

Qualifications We Desire:

  • High school diploma plus five or more years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. May have secondary education.

  • Experience within a laboratory or manufacturing environment (e.g. safety, equipment procurement, equipment maintenance, etc.)

  • Experience using hand tools and machine shop equipment

  • Experience within nuclear deterrence

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interface with technical management and staff

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated teaming skills, including the ability to work effectively with other organizations, customers, and suppliers

  • Experience supporting various environmental test activities

  • Experience within an R&D environment

  • Experience with CAD software (e.g. Pro-E/Creo, SolidWorks etc)

  • Experience developing and interpreting mechanical drawings and understanding geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience with mechanical test equipment, instrumentation and environmental testing

  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.)

About Our Team:

Sandia/California's Handling Gear Engineering Department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems to support the Nuclear Weapons Program. Our group is responsible for handling gear, test gear, and weapon container development; certification; and stockpile support for all weapons in the nuclear stockpile. These responsibilities include ensuring that every weapon and weapon subsystem is managed, lifted, and transported in a safe and secure manner according to recognized standards. With over 15 active projects supporting every major Life Extension Program and Alteration, combined with more than 220 fielded pieces of H-Gear supporting the active stockpile, the H-Gear team provides a continuously challenging, rewarding and dynamic work environment. The various Components & Systems Engineering Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Engineering Centers which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The departments are comprised of groups of dedicated and motivated engineers with technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering.

Security Clearance:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
