Morrison County Correctional Officer Team Leader in Little Falls, Minnesota

POSITION SUMMARY: The Correctional Officer Team Leader will report directly to the Jail Administrator and/or the Assistant Jail Administrator. The Correctional Officer Team Leader will assume the responsibility for the security and operations of the Morrison County jail during an assigned shift. The Correctional officer Team Leader will evaluate the individual work performance of the team members assigned during their shift. Recommending and coaching in areas that are in need of improvement. Correctional Officer Team Leaders ensure the policies and procedures and the work directives are followed in order to maintain the safety and security of the staff, inmates, and the general public that visit the Morrison County Jail. The Correctional Officer Team Leaders are responsible for assigning and ensuring that specific duties assigned to members on their shift are completed. Correctional Officer Team Leaders are also responsible for carrying out the duties of a Correctional Officer during their shift along with the responsibilities of being a Team Leader completely and effectively. The Correctional Officer Team Leader has numerous contacts with individuals, both inside and outside the jail facility, dealing with problems ranging from discipline of inmates to housing out of county inmates and determining where to place individuals while dealing with court officers and other government jurisdictions. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: A. Functions as staff person in charge in the absence of the Jail Administrator or Assistant Jail Administrator, will be responsible for the security of the jail to ensure that it runs in a safe secure manner, and all Policies and Procedures, Rules and Regulations are followed. Will be the contact person on shift on matters that affect the functions of the jail, with other law enforcement and governmental agencies in the absence of the Jail Administrator or Assistant Jail Administrator. Recommends changes in Departmental policy and procedure when necessary for improved performance within the Jail Makes daily inspections of the jail facility for security, cleanliness, condition of emergency equipment, items needing maintenance, repair or painting, health hazards, and makes written reports to the Jail Administrator or Assistant Jail Administrator recommending corrective action. Take active leadership role in such matters as; disturbances, medical emergencies, fire alarms and security matters. Proved exterior security of building facility. B. Shall be responsible for and have the knowledge to assume a leadership role for the jail in the absence of the Jail Administrator or Assistant Jail Administrator. Have a thorough knowledge of, and be able to implement, and assume leadership during emergency procedures as outlined in the policy and procedures manual. Responsible for classification of inmates when programmers are not on duty. Review jail space and determine if beds are available for rent when calls are received during hours administration is not on duty, move/and reclassify inmates if necessary to accommodate boarding of other county inmates. Assess inmate problems and special needs and make immediate changes when appropriate to ensure the safety of inmates and staff. Prepare written reports of all disciplinary violations, when occurred during their shift of duty. Also will review reports of members ensuring accuracy and details before submitting them to the Jail Administrator. Maintain safe working conditions and practices in the department. Monitors team members to assure that they are following the established safety and infection control policy and procedures. Will attend meetings, seminars and special functions. Will plan and lead facility functions and project meetings with supervisory staff and detention officers. Will attend Sheriffs Office interdivisional meetings. Will provide information and assistance to inmates, the public, law enforcement and the courts. May participate in employee recruitment a d selection. Will develop and revise as needed job descriptions for the facility. Accomplish all duties of a Correctional Officer during their shift along with duties and responsibilities assigned as a Correctional Officer Team Leader. To take charge of and secure all Huber payments, bail monies and all other monies taken in during their shift. Work closely with Jail Programmers to ensure work release payments, pay for stay, booking fees, and electronic monitoring payments are collected in a timely manner. Assign and monitor specific work assignments to members of his/her team with the goal of achieving and equitable distribution of the workload. Will act as the Jail Administrator and or Assistant Jail Administrator in their absence, and will immediately notify the Jail Administrator or Assistant Jail Administrator of important decisions made. C. Monitors jail records, which would include booking files, detention, commissary, medical reports and inmate violation reports. Gives initial approval of reports submitted by all team members for content, completeness, and accuracy. The reports submitted include: informational reports, disciplinary reports, shake down reports, incident reports (medical emergencies, fights, etc.). Ensures that incidents needing reports are submitted in a timely manner, per policy, and forward a copy to the Jail Administrator. Checks jail register on a weekly basis to ensure proper entries are being made by team members. Encourage, demonstrate, and in-still and attitude of mutual respect and comradeship among those team members assigned to him/her. Maintain good communications from one shift to another, from team leaders to team members and vice versa, passing on all pertinent information. Report personnel or policy violations to jail Administrator. Performs other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: This position works in a jail setting routinely working with people who are arrested and brought into the jail against their will which many times leaves them angry and difficult to deal with. Many inmates brought in are intoxicated on alcohol or drugs and can become hostile. This position works under the same working conditions as the Correctional Officers. The Correctional Officer Team Leader is routinely required to walk on flat surfaces, climb numerous stairs, or be confined to a seated position or a small area depending on which work station they are responsible for. The Correctional Officer Team Leader must be able to push, pull, lift or drag up to 150 pounds and must be in good physical condition in order to endure the physical demands of the job. The Correctional Officer Team Leader is routinely exposed to contagious diseases such as HIV virus or Hepatitis. The Correctional Officer Team Leader works with hostile, irate inmates and many times is exposed to hostile and irate inmates and many times is exposed to hostile and irate family members, called on to deal directly with these individuals to diffuse situations in a supervisor role. The Correctional Officer Team Leader often times chooses to have an unlisted phone number due to the type of clients that they routinely work with. Many times the Correctional Officer Team Leader is approached at a public place such as a dining hall or a local tavern by an irate former inmate or relative of an inmate and this creates added stress to the Correctional Officer Team Leader.
