As a Utility Meter Technician, you will:

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, repair, install, and/or replace various metering devices to accurately measure and report the water and condensate.
  • Configure and test devices.
  • Repair, install, or replace existing electric meters, meter sockets, CTs, and associated interconnect wiring.
  • Assist with natural gas meters, including assistance with deployment, troubleshooting, and technical evaluation of metering setup, measurement, and programming assistance.
  • Program BTU meters to university standards to properly read consumption and collect data of metering and transmitter information for billing and determination of meter type.
  • Document all work via the internal work management systems.
  • Perform instrument calibrations on flow or process metering equipment and digital or analog pressure and temperature indicators.
  • Assist with technical work or troubleshooting of wired networking systems.
  • Actively participate in the metering system preventative maintenance (PM) program.
  • Assist with recheck readings, field checks, testing, evaluations, and scheduling outages.
  • Interpret drawings, manuals, blueprints, and software systems associated with the utility metering system.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of spare parts, equipment, and accuracy of test equipment.
  • Support utility outages and assist contractors for campus metering activities.

What you bring to the position (minimum qualifications):

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No minimum experience is necessary.
  • Good analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Comfortable working around electricity, steam, natural gas, and water systems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Excellent skills utilizing documentation and record keeping.
  • Demonstrated a good mechanical aptitude.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Understanding of CMMS system.
  • Must be available by phone to address work-related issues and willing to work outside of the normal scheduled shift, such as emergency situations, shift coverage, or other operational needs, either on short notice or with advance notice.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Additional preferred qualifications (not required, but beneficial):

  • Associates degree in industrial instrumentation and controls, electro-mechanical, electronics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Certificate of completion or documented training in utility metering.
  • ISA Certification as related to pressure, temperature, and flow instrumentation.
  • 2+ years of utility metering experience in maintaining, installing, or servicing electrical, gas, water, steam, or other similar measuring equipment as related to utility systems metering.
  • 1+ year of industrial instrumentation and/or controls experience.
  • 1+ year of experience maintaining or servicing electronics, electro-mechanical, or industrial equipment.
  • Experience within UNL Utility Services
  • Experience and working knowledge of UNL campus, buildings, and systems.
  • Experience with JEMS building control systems.
  • Electronics or electrical systems experience.
  • Experience in the instrumentation and controls field.
  • Understanding of electronic communication protocols, including BACnet and/or ModBus.
  • Proficient in CMMS system utilization.
  • ISA CSST Certification
  • ISA CST Certificate Holder
