Central Maine Medical Center Director Acute Care Nursing CMMC in Lewiston, Maine

Position Summary:

Responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to the acute care units of CMMC and is an integral member of the leadership team and a collaborative clinical partner with Physicians, Executives, clinical and support staff working to provide optimal care experience for patients and their families. Provides oversight of the patient care experience, employee engagement, coaching and leading the team for success, managing staffing levels, training metrics, and ensuring achievement of compliance requirements. Instrumental in implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives, actively engaging in patient satisfaction measures, providing direct involvement with work process standards and performance goals to ensure exceptional service delivery and patient care. Responsible to ensure the provision of exceptional medical-surgical and critical care nursing care in a safe and trustful environment resulting in optimal patient/family outcomes. Provides oversight for the overall growth and development of CMMC Nursing departments incorporating the objectives, policies and procedures. Responsible for effective leadership, assuring clinical excellence, supporting professional development, promoting teamwork, collaboration and accountability, and managing CMMC Nursing departments. Reports to chief nursing officer.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide strategic direction and oversee the Acute Care units of M1, M2, M3, M4, T1, T3 and inpatient acute rehab units at CMMC.

  • Empowers, supports, advocates for and inspires direct care nurses and leaders to work toward a shared mission and vision by analyzing assessment data, identifying barriers and opportunities for improvement through utilization of the performance improvement Model P-D-C-A, and using critical thinking skills to make decisions needed to provide the best possible patient care.

  • Assesses nursing practice, standards of patient care and work environment by evaluating data from staff satisfaction survey, staffing effectiveness, core measures, national patient safety goals, patient satisfaction, unit- based and hospital-wide performance improvement and nurse- sensitive indicator data.

  • Responsible and accountable for achieving departmental level expected quality, experience and stewardships in conjunction with nursing’s vision, philosophy and strategic plan, this role serves to provide leadership for the development and implementation of departmental projects/initiative, long and short-term goals and is responsible for planning, administering and evaluating the operations of their assigned departments.

  • Develop, implement and enforce unit-based systems and processes that provide high quality standards. In conjunction with the nursing leaders, this role is responsible for overseeing implementation of patient care via organizational and departmental policies and procedures and evidence-based practices.

  • Ensures a safe, compliant and healthy work environment for all team members.

  • Upholds and consistently acts in concert with the ethical values and principles of the profession and the organization including the service standards

  • Assures that the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses is used to guide nursing practice.

  • Assures that patients are educated on the Patient’s Bill of Rights.

  • Recognizes ethical issues in clinical practice and assists the direct care nurse to seek expert consultation.

  • Ensures adherence to hospital policy for dealing with illegal, incompetent, or impaired practice.

  • Promotes a practice environment which honors the professional autonomy of the registered nurse in the management of patient care.

  • Encourages evidence-based practice and research.

  • Supports teams in maintaining accreditation of program such as CARF and Joint commission.

  • Develops and support units-based councils.

  • Works collaboratively with the clinical education department and the Professional Practice Program Manager to support Nurse Residency Program.

  • Understands the components of cultural competency and assures direct care clinical staff are competent to care for diverse populations.

  • Maintains a work environment that is fair.

  • Supports aging clinical staff with strategic workplace initiatives.

  • Recommends capital, FTE and expense budgets for area of responsibility, utilizes appropriate data to monitor adherence to approved budget, identifies rational for budget variances.

  • Operates within the budgeted plan.

  • Oversees revenue cycle for procedure areas

Education and Experience:

  • Masters of Science in Nursing or equivalent higher degree

  • Board certified in nursing leadership within 1 year

  • Licensed to Practice Nursing in the State of Maine

  • 3 years progressive leadership experience
