Argonne National Laboratory Postbaccalaueate Appointment - Vision Transformers for Science Applications in Lemont, Illinois

In this position, the Postbaccalaureate Appointee will join our Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) to explore the training and application of vision transformers and other LLM architectures applied to scientific datasets. Example applications will be drawn from physics, chemistry, material sciences, or other high impact scientific research areas at Argonne.

Applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning / deep learning (ML/DL) methods to scientific applications. Uses supercomputing facilities at the ALCF, including the Aurora exascale system, other GPU-based systems, as well as specialized AI hardware from vendors such as Cerebras, SambaNova, Graphcore, and Groq. Performs scalability studies, performance tuning, porting to new platforms, and incorporating new AI methods to solve scientific problems.

Position Requirements

  • Recently completed Bachelors degree in computer science, physical sciences, engineering, or related field

  • Programming experience with one or more programming languages, such as C, C++, or Python

  • Experience with machine learning methods and deep learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch and distributed computing.

  • Knowledge of modern software development practices and techniques

  • Effective collaboration skills and ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
