This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year that may be extended for 1 additional year (24 months total) without further competition. Salary: $139,395 (Step 01) to $181,216 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Hydrologist (Bureau Approving Officer) within the Office of Science Quality and Integrity, some of your specific duties will include: Reviews and approves, for release, all types of technical interpretive information products, regardless of media, authored by USGS employees. Provides advice regarding product deficiencies and makes recommendations on how to strengthen proposed or current work. Works with peers, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Fundamental Science Practices Advisory Committee to improve Fundamental Science Practices, ensure consistency in application of standards and increase efficiency in processing USGS information products. Conducts seminars, workshops, webinars, and other training on FSP and the planning, preparing, and reviewing of science information products. Qualifications 1315 - HYDROLOGIST - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of GS-13 level experience may include: 1) Plan, conduct independent research, prepare results, and publish information to advise higher level decision makers, stakeholders, scientific staff, and supervisors; 2) Present findings in a manner to meet the audience's level of understanding on complex/highly technical scientific issues such as training, mentoring, workshops, and/or other training functions; 3) Analyze and interpret project data, enter data into various databases, review accuracy of input, and provide reports of findings; 4) Review, analyze, organize, and recommend changes to publications and policy formats while applying scientific principles and procedures. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
