Job Description:

30% - Installs, monitors, and troubleshoots refrigeration and air conditioning equipment according to building design specifications, blueprints, schematic drawings and maintenance and repair manuals. Disassembles repairs and reassembles air conditioners, growth chambers, cold rooms, refrigerators and freezers and equipment. System sizes vary from 100 tons and below. Monitors building systems equipment, maintains operating logs, records gauge readings, operates and maintains building systems equipment and repairs or replaces parts, calibrates thermostats, adjusts, and assigns pneumatic transistors and tests pneumatic controlled valves operators. Operates refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines and handles CGC and HCFC refrigerants. Installs, monitors, troubleshoots, and makes needed repairs to residential and commercial refrigeration equipment. Requires the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously. Requires the ability to reach, grasp, lift, carry and place moderately heavy load. Requires the ability to operate motor vehicles on occasion.

30% - Answers trouble calls for requested repairs on HVAC equipment such as leaks, defects, condensers, and compressors. Treats condensing water with proper chemicals, as necessary. Operates applicable testing equipment.

15% - Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles air-conditioners, compressors, chillers, etc. Maintains inventory of items used in repair and maintenance work. Keeps records and maintains operating file on machine information as needed for proper service and maintenance.

15% - Installs and monitors refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment according to building design specification, blueprints, and schematic diagrams, Cuts, bends, welds, etc., to connect tubing and refrigerant lines. Installs and maintains electronic controls, installs, and maintains pneumatic controls. Checks OHMS, amperage, and voltages on equipment. Lays out piping systems for air-conditioning equipment systems.

10% - Occasionally acts as lead worker to others on a project-by-project basis. Completes necessary paperwork for project time accounting and other needs. Informs supervisor of status of work in process and on completion. Transports materials, tools and supplies to work sites. Cleans tools and work sites. Performs other related work as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED equivalency

  2. 2 years of experience in refrigeration/air condition installation and repair work. A certificate of completion from a vocational school or an Associate degree in this trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

  3. Must have EPA CFC Certification for refrigerants or able to obtain within 6 months of hire date.

  4. Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.

Advertised Salary Range:

Minimum $46,000 annually ($22.11 hourly). Salary offers increase with relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. 3 years or more of experience in refrigeration/air condition/refrigeration equipment, DX residential air conditioning units, DX commercial air conditioning units and small chiller systems 100 tons and smaller, installation and repair work.

  2. Experience working in a college or university setting

  3. Experience working with HVAC systems in large multi-storied institutional or residential buildings.

  4. Electrical experience including a working knowledgeable of the National Electric Code

  5. Applied ability to read and understand blueprints as evidenced by work experience.

Position Overview:

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. This position is responsible for providing on-site monitoring in large buildings that house offices, classrooms, dorms, and labs. Installs, monitors and trouble shoots, services, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment as well as work with pneumatic and electronic controls. System sizes vary typically from 100 tons and below. Must be able to operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guideline for CFC and HCFC refrigerants. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.
