A Brief Summary of This Position:

Are you ready to take the lead in managing medium to high voltage electrical substation and transmission line material procurement projects? Join our team as a Project Manager, where you will drive the direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of projects, ensuring they align with our company's strategy, commitments, and goals.

In this individual contributor role, you will identify key project milestones and develop project timelines that support defined deliverables. You'll be responsible for assessing project risks and devising effective mitigation strategies. As the principal point of contact from the inquiry stage through to delivery and closeout, you will manage all orders related to each assigned customer account.

Collaborating with team members and third-party contractors or consultants, you will ensure project deliverables are met according to plan. You will also provide weekly project status updates to management and executive levels.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Senior Director of Substation Packaging and has no direct reports and no indirect reports

  • This role requires minimal travel up to 10% including overnight stays, tied to training on other Valmont sites or visits to clients

  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end, including defining project scope, goals, and deliverables, and communicating with customers

  • Identify key project milestones, develop project timelines and management plans, and track project deliverables.

  • Obtain quotes from manufacturers, negotiate pricing, and review material upon arrival for compliance.

  • Manage cost efficiency by analyzing client drawings or specifications and performing “Take-off” of custom structures, equipment, and materials for electrical substations or transmission lines to ensure unnecessary items are excluded from estimates.

  • Implement strategies to reduce project costs, maximize production, and enhance customer relations.

  • Ensure proper fit and function of products by reviewing drawings, cut-sheets, material dimensions, etc.

  • Manage project expectations with team members and stakeholders, resolving issues and conflicts within the project team.

  • Coordinate development and delivery of progress reports, requirements documentation, and presentations.

  • Conduct project post-mortems to create recommendations for future success.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or Associate’s Degree with 7+ years of relevant experience or 9+ years of relevant experience

  • Physical design background of electrical substations with attributes of 15KV to 500KV

  • Prior experience utilizing Critical Path Methodology (CPM)

  • Ability to develop schedules that integrate dependent and independent activities, including start-end time dependencies and time/cost estimates for activities.

  • Ability to identify potential project schedule risks and cost adherence

  • Prior experience with MS Office Suite programs and General computer knowledge

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, 1-2 year technical degree, or related trade plus a minimum of 2 years related experience with a commercial or industrial general contractor

  • Previous experience in a substation related field, such as: Substation Engineer, Structural Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Electrical Designer / Detailer, Electrical Lineman, Inside Sales, Drafter

  • Prior experience with AutoCAD

  • Prior experience with MS Project or other scheduling program experience

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Understanding of contract terms and associated risks

  • Understanding of standard cost accounting methods

  • Undertaking project profitability analysis

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. Moderate travel requirements exist for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
