Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets. This position serves as the Epidemiology Operations Supervisor and provides oversight to programmatic activities and staff within the county epidemiology program. The position reports to the Epidemiology Program Director. This position also works in conjunction with other members of the local Disease Control team to ensure the health and safety of the community.

  • This position serves as the lead expert for disease investigations and surveillance. Supervises program activities including communicable disease surveillance and reporting; disease investigations and control; outbreak and epidemiologic response. Works in collaboration with hospitals and consultants to follow-up on cases that need prophylaxis. Provides consultation in disease interventions for cases and contacts. Assists in coordination and investigation of disease outbreaks. Involved in the city-wide hospital infection control committee. Acts as the local expert on epidemiological investigation.

  • This position assists in developing, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating multi-use surveillance systems to identify unusual disease occurrence, including disease clusters or unusually high disease frequency. This position will require developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with health care providers, including hospitals, clinics, and physicians within the county. This person supervises staff responsible for determining methods to analyze surveillance data in a timely manner to execute appropriate responses. Assists in developing and applying analytic methods to allow for early detection of possible disease outbreaks and coordinates implementation of prevention and control measures. Participates in developing policies and procedures for the Epidemiology Program and ensures they are implemented and updated as needed.

  • Communicates in writing, in person, and through electronic means concisely and positively. Takes initiative to multi-task with accuracy. Communicates and solves problems appropriately. Exhibits and maintains a positive attitude while working independently and in a team setting.

  • Prepares, proofreads, edits, and/or routes correspondence to internal and external partners, as well as other entities with accuracy and promptness. This will include journal articles, publications, and spreadsheets.

  • Develops assessment and assurance monitoring systems in collaboration with health department management and with community stakeholders. Attends and/or facilities meetings and attends conferences representing the department. Appears at public meetings, lectures to groups as requested and assists with preparation of public service announcements and statements to the media.

  • Assists the program director in managing budget and programmatic issues for the epidemiology program.

  • Provides quality educational opportunities and training for students. Works with the management team, physicians, nurses, disease intervention specialists and other staff to develop and provide an interdisciplinary team approach to case management. Participates in quality improvement activities. Attends staff meetings, in-services, seminars and trainings for self-improvement, increased competency, and retention of skills. Participates in orientation and staff development programs for persons working in the Epidemiology Program.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Epidemiology and its application to public health.

  • Knowledge of surveillance systems, research methodology and data analysis.

  • Knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries and disease.

  • Knowledge of plant and animal living tissue, cells, organisms, and entities, including their functions and interactions with each other and the environment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly.

  • Ability to solve problems.

  • Ability to implement practices.

  • Ability to gather information for decision-making.

    Qualifications:

    Master of Public Health (MPH)/Epidemiology and experience in epidemiology and team/program supervision/lead preferred. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in public health or equivalent with extensive experience in epidemiology and team/program supervision/lead can substitute for an MPH.
