Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Security Research Engineer to work in our Vehicle Grid Integration Group. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. Hybrid work opportunities may be available for this position. You will report to the Department Manager.

The senior researcher will lead research related to electrification of light, medium and heavy-duty transportation. The Energy Storage and Electric Transportation Department conducts cutting-edge research, demonstration, and deployment support to understand and improve the impact of energy storage and electric transportation technologies on the nation's energy future. Transportation electrification is core to INL's broader mission of clean energy integration, given the significant portion of energy consumed to move goods and people across the country.

Responsibilities Include:

You will lead a team performing research, development, and characterization of advanced charging technologies.

Your work will directly contribute to the creation of a national EV charging network that serves all forms of electric vehicles and is convenient, affordable, reliable, and equitable.

You will help lead efforts to understand how vehicle electrification impacts grid performance, system reliability and resiliency.

This includes how vehicles fit within the broad integrated energy system through V2X capabilities, understanding cybersecurity vulnerabilities and coupling of different charging technologies with stationary energy storage.

You will bring an understanding of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and EV technology, combined with expertise in experimental design, data collection, analysis, and testing.

You will mentor junior researchers and other staff.

You have experience leading multiple contributor projects and engaging diverse teams.

Experience with the functional requirements of electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) including high power systems is important.

The ability to design experiments and data acquisition methods and then use those methods to capture information is a necessary portion of the position.

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced degree in an engineering or scientific field and 3 years experience (PR03); or advanced degree and 6 years of experience (PR04)

Have 3 years of research experience in EV infrastructure performance and operation.

Hands-on experience working on high power EV supply equipment (EVSE) of at least 150 kilowatt

Understanding of light, medium and heavy-duty electrification strategies

Desired experience:

Experience with cybersecurity requirements for EVSE

Prior publication record in either peer reviewed journals, conference proceedings or important reports

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 1 ($110,316 - $181,956) / Level 2 ($124,368 - $211,596). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
