General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

We have an exciting opportunity in our Aerospace Systems Engineering Directorate. This full-time position for a Senior Systems Engineer to be located at our Huntsville, AL site. This position will provide technical expertise for system design and development from requirements definition through verification for weapon system development projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES:

  • Provide technical expertise to lead, or support, the systems engineering aspects of one or more weapon system development projects.

  • Elicit customer and stakeholder needs and define mission and system level requirements.

  • Decompose system level requirements into subsystem and component level requirements.

  • Support definition of verification methods and activities; define acceptance criteria; review verification artifacts for compliance; develop verification statements summarizing closure of verification testing.

  • Define and document system Concept of Operations.

  • Develop DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) viewpoints and models.

  • Develop functional flow diagrams, functional block diagrams, and other systems engineering artifacts using traditional/classical systems engineering techniques.

  • Capture and maintain requirements in DOORS, Jama, or other requirements management tools.

  • Develop system models using SysML and Model Based System Engineering methods in Cameo.

  • Define and manage risks and opportunities and associated mitigation/realization plans.

  • Tailor entrance and exit criteria and objective evidence requirements for formal customer-focused design reviews such as System Requirements Review, Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Pre-Ship Readiness Review, etc.

  • Develop systems engineering content and briefing materials in support of program management reviews and design reviews.

  • Plan and conduct trade studies, analyze technical data, and extract and document conclusions from results.

  • Support development of subcontract Statements of Work and design specifications such as Critical Item Development Specifications (CIDS).

  • Support evaluation of supplier technical proposals.

  • Support peer reviews.

  • Facilitate rapid resolution of delays that impact the program using thorough communication with task leads, program management and other leadership is required.

  • Collaborate daily with GA and customer engineering and program management teams.

  • Support development of systems engineering related contract data deliverables.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree or PhD in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering with an emphasis on application of systems engineering from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; 9 or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, 7 or more years of experience with a master’s degree, 4 or more years of experience with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of systems engineering concepts, principles, and defense industry best practices.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead teams of systems engineers and other engineering disciplines through the design and development process, including design reviews, is required.

  • A strong understanding and prior experience with missile, guided projectile, or hypersonic vehicle systems and subsystems is required.

  • Working knowledge of the government Military Standards and other industry reference documents relevant to weapon system design and development is required.

  • Previous experience with DOORS, Jama, or other requirements management tool is required.

  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas.

  • Proven ability and desire to mentor and train less experienced systems engineers is required.

  • Must have an active Department of Defense (DoD) Secret level security clearance, with the ability to upgrade to Top Secret if required.

  • Able to work extended hours as required.

  • Success in position requires consistent display of the following key abilities:

Desired Job Qualifications

  • Substantial prior experience with SysML, Model Based Systems Engineering, and the Cameo suite of tools is strongly desired.

  • Experience with developing and allocating power budgets, mass/volume budgets, link budgets, and other similar system level analyses is strongly desired.

  • Experience with Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and reliability analysis is strongly desired.

  • Experience with developing proposals, white papers, and requests for information is strongly desired.

  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is desired.

  • Experience with systems engineering for, and development of, small satellites or other spacecraft is desired.

  • Prior experience with system safety is desired.

  • Prior experience with weapon system unit cost estimation is desired.
