At Marshall Space Flight Center we are looking for an entry-level OHS Industrial Hygienist.

Responsibilities:

Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort among workers. Inspect facilities to ensure compliance with accepted industrial hygiene practices and OSHA regulations. Interface with the MSFC Industrial Safety Office regarding unsafe conditions or potential safety hazards observed at various worksites. Perform food service inspections. Support MSFC SDS database and proactive procurement activities Serve as subject matter expert for IH programs such as ergonomics, hearing conservation, hazard communication, nanoparticles, food safety, indoor air quality, chemical hygiene. Obtain information regarding worker(s) exposure to noise, toxic materials, and other agents, which might affect worker health, document, or ensure documentation with worker(s) medical chart(s) maintained at the MSFC Medical Center Investigate worker complaints and complaints regarding worksites and recommend or perform necessary functions for remediation of the problem(s). Review engineering drawings, and/or sketches, engineering work requests for modifications of worksites, and make appropriate recommendations regarding accepted industry practices of industrial hygiene. Maintain and update computer databases relating to industrial hygiene activities (e.g., inspections, surveys, and accomplishments) Maintain industrial hygiene monitoring equipment, perform necessary equipment calibrations, and/or process equipment through the in-house calibration facility. Develop and prepare training manuals/materials, safety and health procedures and/or manuals, and other documents as required by OSHA or other Federal regulatory agencies. Present formal training sessions for the occupational medicine and environmental health staff, MSFC civil service employees, and on-site contractor employees as appropriate (e.g., hazard communication, hearing conservation, universal precautions regarding blood-borne pathogens, respiratory protection, confined spaces) Serve on MSFC committees (e.g., Operation Readiness Review, Safety Review, Test Readiness Reviews, and other committees as required) Attend weekly (or as scheduled) Occupational Health program review meetings. Contribute to monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports relating to activities and achievements accomplished by the Occupational Health program. Maintain continuing education requirements for professional certifications. Perform required monitoring, sample collection, and analysis for potential exposures. Perform building surveys and exposure assessments. Maintain an interface with the Respiratory Protection program technicians, give advice on types of respiratory protection equipment, and serve as a “back-up” when needed. Assist other industrial hygiene personnel as may be required on special work assignments. Support and perform other environmental health/industrial hygiene duties and assist with requests from the occupational medicine program to ensure efficient operations. Provide various educational media resources for quarterly safety and health meetings. Recommend supplies and equipment essential to the daily operation of the Occupational Health program. Assist in training MSFC employees regarding the Occupational Health program.

Education Requirements:

  • B.S. Degree in Industrial Hygiene (IH) or related field

  • Formal Training: IH, health physics, toxicology, industrial ventilation, IH management and additional areas related to the field of IH

Experience/Training Requirements:

  • 0-3 years technical experience in industrial hygiene/environmental health

  • HAZWOPER training

Desired Skills:

Ability to work within defined time requirements and ensure deadlines are met. Demonstrated ability to create written reports, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets. Demonstrate effective personal interaction. Ability to work with teams, as well as independently. Proficient in oral and written communication (e.g., writing reports, e-mail correspondence, oral presentations, compilation of data, data manipulation, basic computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office and Internet). Proficient in the use of various industrial hygiene monitoring devices. Ability to handle difficult situations involving personnel, customers, or others in a professional manner.
