Job Overview:
The Chief Mate of the vessel will report to and is directed by the Captain/Master and has overall responsibility for supervision of deck maintenance and bridge crew.
Supervises Second Mate, Third Mate, Dynamic Positioning Operators, Able Body Seaman, Ordinary Seaman
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Responsible for maintenance on the deck, deck structures, and exterior and interior areas other than engineering spaces
Responsible for the supervision, training, and evaluation of all persons in the Bridge crew and maintains and administers discipline to vessel personnel
Have a comprehensive understanding of the DP computer/control system in various modes of operation
Sets watches, assigns jobs, approves overtime and ensures that assigned jobs are completed successfully by bridge personnel
Identifies maintenance needs, sets and revises priorities, and assigns maintenance activities
Requisitions supplies necessary for the safe efficient operations of vessel
Assist with medical emergencies as they occur
Participates in two-way radio, computer or telephone communications with other vessels, the crew, the radio room operator, and other shore based personnel
Have a general knowledge of vessel’s work activities
Ensures that Company rules, safety policies, USCG/flag state rules and regulations and environmental policies are understood and adhered to
Maintain Bridge administrative files
Conduct daily pre-shift meetings
Complete daily ships stability log
File completed work order sheets and ensure preventive maintenance work orders are updated
Maintain ship’s fire safety plans
Generate and conduct required emergency drills. Update the drill matrix
Act as primary Vessel Security Officer. Maintain Vessel Security Plan and conduct security drills
Ensure current MARSEC levels are followed onboard
Essential Qualifications and Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Holds and maintains a USCG and Flag State license for Chief Mate, ocean, steam or motor, unlimited tonnage with radar observer endorsement.
Holds FCC and Flag State GMDSS license.
Holds current STCW endorsements applicable to vessel upon which he/she is serving.
Holds a Nautical Institute Unlimited DP Operators Certificate
Holds Current Vessel Security Officer Certificate
