A ship painter, also known as a marine painter, prepares, paints, or repaints the surfaces of marine vessels and equipment. They work with a variety of surfaces, including wood, fiberglass, metal, and heavy equipment. Their duties may include:
Preparing surfaces: Sanding, blasting, cleaning, or removing old paint or rust
Applying paint: Using brushes, rollers, or specialized spray equipment to apply marine coatings according to the manufacturer's processes
Mixing paint: Tinting paints or mixing colors or oils to achieve the desired color or consistency
Making repairs: Making small fiberglass repairs or filling and fairing repairs with surfacing filler
Applying other finishes: Applying primers, sealants, or unique compounds that prevent corrosion
Performing quality inspections: Interpreting paint schedules, calculating surface areas, estimating material requirements, and testing paint grade, viscosity, and fineness
