General Description POSTING TYPE: Open-competitive DEPARTMENT: County Attorney HOURS: Full-time PREFERRED HIRING RANGE: $60,396 - 75,495/year FULL SALARY RANGE: $60,396 - 94,369/year (Grade 107) LOCATION: Judicial Center, Hastings UNION: None CLOSE DATE: 4:30 pm on Thursday, June 27, 2024 What You ll Do The Dakota County Attorney's Office is seeking motivated and detail-oriented candidates that would like to be considered for a Paralegal position. The current vacancy is in the Civil Division; however, office needs may require transfers to other divisions as needed. The Paralegal in the Civil Division assists attorneys in real estate (eminent domain/condemnation), collections (estate administration/bankruptcy), asset forfeitures, data practices, general civil litigation, administrative and tax cases. Work is performed independently under general supervision of the division head, with direction from staff attorneys. Duties & Responsibilities These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions. Duties in the Civil Division: 1. Provide assistance, as needed, in the following types of civil cases: eminent domain/condemnation, civil defense litigation, collections, probate estate administration, asset forfeitures, public benefits appeals, foster and child care licensing appeals, property tax appeals, enforcement of County ordinances, environmental regulatory actions, and other general civil matters. 2. Perform basic real property title and encumbrance research. 3. Assist in preparation of condemnation petitions and resulting litigation. 4. Prepare/draft legal documents including affidavits, memoranda, real estate conveyance documents and contracts for County departments with direction from assistant county attorney. 5. Review civil forfeiture cases and prepare pleadings and statistical reports. 6. Assist in probate administration of medical assistance cases. 7. Litigation duties, as needed, including drafting pleadings, discovery requests/responses, affidavits, motions, and other documents; preparing exhibits; interviewing and preparing witnesses; scheduling depositions; gathering relevant facts and information; and hearing/trial preparation and assistance. 8. Successfully complete other duties, as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1-7 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment Working knowledge of relevant laws, rules, and regulations in practice areas. Working knowledge of court rules, procedures, and practices. Working knowledge of and ability to do basic legal research. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to abide by federal, state and office confidentiality requirements. Ability to work timely, efficiently, and effectively with minimal supervision. Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and adapt to frequently changing work demands. Working knowledge of common computer equipment, computerized case management systems, and office software such as Microsoft Office products. Working knowledge of common trial presentation software. Working knowledge of common audio/video equipment and editing software. Work Environment Work is performed within a County office building. Lifting requirement of up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis. Location & Schedule This is a hybrid position that offers a mix of telework and in-person work at our Judicial Center in Hastings, MN.
