A research associate is being recruited to work in Laboratory of Animal Immune Responses ( LAIR ) within the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

The research associate will provide support for the Principal Investigator of the LAIR in all aspects of research activities including; working with the PI to develop and execute research projects, write grant proposals and manuscripts as well as lead daily management of the laboratory, the students, and the research activities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills, and be able work independently with minimal supervision.

The candidate will have the ability to exercise strong scientific judgment to troubleshoot experiments and adapt quickly to meet work assignments/ deadlines; and demonstrate the ability to generate figures, author/ co-author grants and manuscripts and with excellent oral and written communication skills serve as primary presenter within department and/ or at professional conferences.

The Department of Animal Sciences is one of four departments in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Baccalaureate degree programs in the Department of Animal Sciences prepare students for careers in animal sciences, biotechnology, biomedical research, pharmaceutical, and related industries, for graduate school, and for entry into veterinary and human medicine professional schools. It houses a Laboratory Animal Resources Unit, along with classrooms, class laboratories, and research laboratories equipped with leading-edge scientific instrumentation. The department also maintains the 492-acre University Farm, featuring active livestock (pig, poultry, small and large ruminants) and horticultural production, supporting, teaching, research, and extension. Researchers have active projects in the areas of animal nutrition and health; infectious disease; immunology and vaccinology; food security; sustainable livestock production, reproductive technology; meat science and muscle biology, bioinformatics, and genomic diversity of farm animals.

The Laboratory of Animal Immune Responses ( LAIR ) 800 sq.ft. laboratory space housed in the Department of Animal Sciences on the main campus of North Carolina A&T State University. The long- term research goals are focused on promoting positive immune responses of animals and humans through plant products and feed supplements. The lab utilizes cell and molecular techniques in tandem with in vitro and in vivo models to study immune regulation of animals and humans. The assay capabilities include, tissue culture, and molecular techniques such as western blotting, PCR , RT PCR , ELISA , flow cytometry.

Requirements:

Master’s degree from an accredited university in immunology or related discipline within the biological and biomedical or animal science field .

Prior experience using cell and molecular techniques and conducting research using in vitro systems and in vivo animal models.

Must have a willingness to work with mice and swine and conduct both on farm and laboratory experiments.

Preferred:

· PhD in immunology or related animal health or biomedical discipline; or

· Master’s degree in immunology or related animal health or biomedical discipline with at least 5 years of laboratory experience.

· Experience working with in vitro (immune cell culture) and in vivo animal models.

· Experience with cell and molecular techniques common to immunology research, such as cell culture assays, ELISA , western blotting, flow cytometry, PCR /qPCR.

· Ability to design and troubleshoot experiments and conduct literature searches to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.

· Proficiency in statistical analysis of biological data.

· Competency utilizing laboratory instrumentation and software commonly associated with molecular and immunology-based research, this position requires the skill and experience to run and conduct minor maintenance on these instruments.

· Experience supervising and mentoring students in research.

· Experience publishing scientific research manuscripts and writing grant proposals.

    This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
