Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant under the direction of the Health Center Manager and Refugee Health Program Manager, is a member of the CCI clinical team, and is responsible for assisting and supporting the RHA program and the CCI clinical team in providing high quality, direct patient care for both pediatric and adult patients under the direct supervision of a licensed clinician or nurse. In addition, the MA performs administrative functions and assists with planning and implementing work processes, ensuring all core activities delineated in the agreement with MDH are performed and follow relevant (MDH, CDC) guidelines. This position will float between all CCI health center locations as needed.  

 

As a member of the health center’s integrated care team, the Medical Assistant, RHA will fulfill the following KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES towards the provision of patient-centered, coordinated patient care:

  • Performs and documents intake and screening procedures for the clinical team including but not limited to:  laboratory tests, hearing and vision testing, growth charts, head circumference, height, weight, EKGs, and vital signs. 

  • Assist with the Maryland Immigrant and Refugee Information (MIRI) data entry. Maintain a record of Data entry. Effectively communicate with program manager about MIRIS related issues. Data entry must be entered within 3 days of assessment.

  • Answering phones and scheduling appointments. Collaborates with RHA Program Manager to ensure that patients with higher priority health conditions are scheduled earlier for the visit with RHA provider or are scheduled for primary care provider visit. Perform outreach calls to patients and/or specialty offices as requested. 

  • Communication skills using appropriate medical terminology. Use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations. 

  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public. 

  • Conducts pre-visit planning for all RHA providers for the second visit, including notation of abnormal lab results, whether patients received presumptive parasite treatment overseas, and assisting RN in determining vaccines that are due for all patients < or = age 18 years.

  • Regularly monitors all patients with positive Tuberculin Skin Test or QuantiFERON test and ensures chest x-ray is done to rule out active tuberculosis TB as well as coordinating patient treatment of latent TB. 

  • Assist RN in monitoring all pediatric patients with a lead level >4 mcg/dL and contacts patient’s guardians to do follow-up testing as recommended by MDH guidelines. 

  • Assists the RN with managing the flow of the team’s daily schedule. Ensure that calls are made a day prior to confirming patient’s appointments. 

  • Participates in daily huddles in a manner consistent with PCMH initiatives. 

  • Ensuring that infectious diseases are reported to the appropriate Health Department. 

  • Assists with pre-authorization forms for prescriptions and liaises with MCOs and pharmacies to get approvals and prescriptions filled and delivered to patients. 

  • Assists in the management, documentation, and development of all programs under the grant. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

    Required Skills or Abilities:  

  • Ability to implement, monitor, and manage grant-specific requirements within the primary care setting. 

  • Performs cleaning specifications of various medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related  materials. 

  • Prepare and administer vaccines. 

  • Properly distribute inventory. 

  • Cultural competence in the health care setting, including communicating with patients of low health literacy levels and working with interpreters. 

  • Maintain supplies, and equipment and/or maintain quality control standards. 

  • Safely utilizes cleaning solvents and related products. 

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. 

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. 

  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and protocols, including federal, state, and local laws for the handling and disposal of hazardous biochemical waste products. 

  • Computer and data entry skills are a must. 

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred. Current system in use: eCW 

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and have successfully completed and graduated from a medical assistant program. 

  • Current CPR certification. 

  • Must have skills, ability, and temperament to train new employees. 

  • Performs standard tasks associated with patient care with minimal oversight from the supervisor. 

  • Ability to perform data entry. 

  • Ability to travel between health center locations as needed.
