General Summary:

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the operations of University of Michigan Health West Hospital. Actively participates with the Chief Executive Officer in the strategic planning and results evaluation processes. Maintains continuous communication with and facilitates communication among the physicians, managers, staff, employees and the community so that these constituencies are appropriately informed regarding UMH-West operations, and results. Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local laws, regulations and licensure requirements and corporate and organization policies. Directs all operational activities of UMH-West and performs related administrative duties to ensure safe, effective and efficient operations and assure quality healthcare is provided to patients. The COO will function as the backup Environment of Safety Officer (ESO) in the Safety Officer's absence.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Master's degree in Healthcare, Business Administration or closely related field required.

Five years' progressive healthcare leadership experience at a senior executive level.

The individual should have strong, well-developed mentoring and coaching skills in order to be a role model for the development of managers, employees and leaders.

The person should demonstrate a solid understanding of business principles and practices and healthcare finance.

The individual should have excellent interpersonal skills and be an effective communicator with well-developed presentation skills.

Must be a strong organizer, planner and have the demonstrated ability to effect change.

The person should be a responsible decision-maker with an understanding of finance, operations and legal/regulatory factors related to delivery of patient care.

The individual should be able to persuade and motivate others and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The individual should make a professional appearance and have a friendly, outgoing personality.

Should be comfortable networking and have well-developed social skills.

The management style should be informal but professional, collaborative, team oriented, accepting of diversity, include active listening, based on Total Quality Management principles, visible, and supportive of responsible risk taking.
