About you and this role- What you will do in this role

This role supports manufacturing operations by consulting with the plant client to understand their needs, conducting complex routine and non-routine laboratory analyses, evaluating standard and non-standard results using statistical tools as needed to ensure high quality data and results are delivered to the client and customer. Uses data systems to monitor analytical system performance, makes modifications, as needed, for changing requirements and improvements and reports results to clients and customers. Performs complex calibration and preventive maintenance of analytical equipment and methods. Provides implementation and qualification of new analytical equipment and methods. Requires full proficiency in a range of technical, operational, or analytical/scientific processes and procedures through job-related training and considerable on the job experience to perform a variety of work assignments. Acts as an informal resource for team members with less experience.

The purpose of this job is to provide reliable analytical information using appropriate analytical tools with interpretation of results in consultation with manufacturing and engineering. Through the use of analytical knowledge and tools, the role exists to support multiple businesses and functions with routine, non-routine, advanced and complex analysis. The role also requires excellent analytical trouble-shooting and problem solving skills to help resolve plant issues and possess strong analytical knowledge for development of new analytical methods. This role works closely with Environment Operations, Energy Systems, Wells, Maintenance, Polyethylene, Hydrocarbons, Prentiss, operations, on-line analyzer, maintenance and EH&S businesses and personnel.

Team player that is willing to share knowledge and ideas. Working within the Shared MPQ lab, the successful candidate will help provide analytical support for Dow Fort Saskatchewan site plants and functions.

Responsibilities- Duties, projects, tasks, and activities you would be responsible for in this role

  • Schedule and perform expert level operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instruments and systems in multiple areas of analytical technology.

  • Performs complex routine and non-routine analyses, modifies routine methods for non-routine analysis as needed, and coaches team members with less experience to gain proficiency in these methods.

  • Facilitates the sample submission process for routine and non-routine samples, reviewing all submissions for value and alignment with plant goals.

  • Investigate and troubleshoot suspect results and variability in instrument performance.

  • Select appropriate analytical measurement techniques based on knowledge of product, process and sample characteristics. Use established methodology to generate and interpret data with the appropriate levels of detection, precision, and accuracy.

  • Development, validation, and implementation of new analytical methods.

  • Development, validation, and technical documentation for new MET (most effective technology) analytical methodology and systems as needed to solve plant problems

  • Develop and continuously improve work processes and written work instructions.

  • Use advanced statistical tools to measure analytical system performance and to evaluate results.

  • Performs troubleshooting, improvement, and maintenance on Laboratory Information Technology (LIT) and data handling systems.

  • Document and report results in a timely manner to the clients.

  • Train and mentor other lab personnel in the operation of analytical systems and in the work practices of the group.

  • Network with others to leverage technology, problem solving and prevention.

  • Optimize the lab program and work flow

  • Maintain quality system requirements for the lab.

  • Escalates non-routine requests to appropriate subject matter experts for follow-up.

  • Satisfy all safety and quality requirements of the department. Actively participate in the department safety program. Continuously improve EH&S and analytical performance.

Qualifications- Required education, experience and abilities that are needed for this role (must haves)

  • A minimum of a 2 year college diploma in Chemical Technology or equivalent is required. In lieu of a degree Dow will consider those with 4 or more years of relevant military experience.

  • 3 or more years of experience in an industrial lab role or analytical lab technologist role.

  • Able to work overtime as needed.

  • A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in the Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

Preferred Skills -An expanded list of qualifications that are "nice to have", but not essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Technology, Chemistry or equivalent.

  • 7 or more years of experience in an industrial lab role or analytical lab technologist role.

  • Previous experience with data quality assurance.

  • Previous experience with FT-IR, titrations, GC, ICP, IC, LC, TGA, TOC and other analytical instrumentation.

  • Previous experience with LIMS and typical Office software programs.

  • Previous experience with development and implementation of lab safety related programs and procedures.
