Katmai Scientific Data Analyst IV (Injury Epidemiologist) in Fort Rucker, Alabama

Summary:

Perform scientific and engineering data analysis and project support services to ensure the efficient and effective planning, execution, and completion of Injury Biomechanics Research Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E), analysis, and investigation projects in fields such as injury biomechanics, injury analysis, injury epidemiology, injury prevention, mishap/crash prevention, or a related field to accomplish the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory’s (USAARL’s) Injury Biomechanics mission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific analytical services (from data entry, quality assessment, to complex analysis) related to data acquisition (e.g., instrumentation, high speed video, medical images, or engineering and medical databases), data management, and data analysis according to approved protocols, policies, and/or plans to ensure quality, accuracy, and reproducibility of data/results.

  • Communicate with the entire research, analysis, or investigative team regarding plans, progress, and outcomes of study design, programming, and analysis. Assess and maintain the integrity, safety, and quality of data, both physical and electronic materials. The contractor shall provide guidance to project team and management.

  • Shall work independently as a credentialed Associate Investigator, or potentially as a Principal Investigator, and rely on extensive knowledge, experience, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Work independently in collaboration with study PI (if applicable) and under the direction of Team Chief and Group Leadership, with minimal strategic and technical direction to address analytic, theoretical, scientific, and operational questions, solve analytic and technical problems, and execution analytic, theoretical, scientific, and administrative solutions.

  • Set appropriate project deadlines, assign responsibilities, and monitor project progress in terms of cost, schedule, performance, and risk; manage and develop methodology, projects, personnel, and resources; and perform administrative and coordination duties and responsibilities independently based on broad guidance, taskers, objectives, and/or SOPs provided by the Government through Group Leadership as well as use individual initiative to support research projects.

  • Provide analytic, research, and programmatic services related to the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E program, particularly related to PMHS or human research volunteers; material testing; biomedical instrumentation; ATDs; and data acquisition and analysis, including the development of research proposals, plans, and protocols to address existing or newly defined research needs/gaps according to policy and procedures of USAARL. All aspects of RDT&E are included, such as Human Subject Research, Research Not Involving Human Subjects (RNIHS), animal and cadaveric studies, and Test and Evaluations.

  • Provide services related to preparing reports, presentations, manuscripts, and other documentation on research progress and findings, that will be ready for distribution and presentation (by incumbent or others) within the laboratory and/or at small or large scientific, professional, technical, or programmatic forums within and outside of USAARL.

  • Provide expertise in developing and writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will ensure sound scientific and programmatic principles and safety procedures are implemented and followed per USAARL and MRMC approval process and existing policies. Such SOPs will be used during the execution of research protocols and research/test plans that may include volunteers, cadaveric specimens, animals, and/or other biological/biomedical and non-biological materials and devices, such as PPE. Such SOPs may include the operation and Best Practices of data acquisition, instrumentation, and specialized equipment.

  • Provide reliable, timely, and quality analytic and programmatic services (as described above) in a team environment to industrial, military, academic customers/partners in meeting customer, stakeholder, project, and/or program timelines through the testing and/or research life cycle (development and execution of test plans and protocols, analysis of laboratory, field, and theater data, analysis and documentation of findings related to injuries and/or PPE).

  • Assist with writing research work plans, proposals, data collection procedures, and agreements.

  • Provide scientific analytical services related to data analysis, data scientific quality assessment, and data management according to approved protocols, policies, and/or plans to ensure quality, accuracy, future use, and reproducibility of data/results (e.g., by following scientific procedures, recording information, documenting research, and properly storing data.)

  • Acquire, manage, and analyze data (obtained safety, engineering, and medical databases).

  • Assess RFIs and RDT&E questions for analysis questions and determine analysis plan.

  • Perform analysis on large medical injury, mishap/accident/incident/safety investigations, and research data by writing and/or developing algorithms and processing data through COTS and/or custom analysis software.

  • Develop and direct the use of Best Practices for data management, file structures, and relational databases.

  • Develop and update appropriate analysis documentation and store documents and data in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.

  • Ensure that plans and execution of analysis meets all applicable timelines, approval processes, regulations, guidance, and procedures.

  • Provide scientific analytical services by applying the principles of statistics, numerical methods, research, injury analysis, and programming. Such application will require individual research, synthesis of research and mathematical literature, programming in relevant software, modification and use of previously created scripts, creation of batch jobs, data quality assessments, and handling large data sets. Additionally, documentation of analysis will be required within developed and modified scripts and codes along with scientific documentation such as papers, reports, and presentations.

  • Provide understanding and implementation of project planning, management, and execution; data use; and scientific and programmatic analysis needs to a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, physicians, computer scientists, database developers, data entry clerks, data quality assessors, safety professionals, and other biomedical researchers.

  • Perform other data-related and research equipment/facilities support functions, including physical packing, digitizing, moving, shipping, inventory, relocation, and re-organization, as needed.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Shall have a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering related field such as electrical, biomedical, mechanical, biomechanics, physics, etc. and three (3) years of experience in biomedical engineering or clinical is required as this person must act as a credentialed Associate Investigator (AI).

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in engineering related field such as electrical, biomedical, mechanical, biomechanics, physics, etc. and six (6) years of experience in biomedical engineering or clinical is preferred, as this position may be required to apply for, obtain, and maintain Principal Investigator (PI) credentials.

  • Shall have knowledge of commonly used and advanced concepts, practices, standards, and procedures as demonstrated through experience and/or a degree and coursework in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field from an accredited program and demonstrated through publications.

  • Shall have experience with accepted industry Best Practices and software for statistical analysis, such as SPSS and SPS, and project planning, management, and execution.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

  • Must be able to read, understand and execute techniques and procedures within the quality standards and timelines prescribed by the research plan.

  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and initiatives at one time.

  • Good written communication skills and a solid understanding of Government contracting and the professional services industry.

  • Good computer skills with advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite software.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented.

  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality.

  • Proven ability to exercise mature judgment – specifically in recognizing and respecting the confidential nature of corporate and personnel matters.

Job Requirements:

Work Schedule:

Full time, 40 hours per week. May work variable work hours to meet performance requirements (e.g., proposal and reporting deadlines, collaborations, and lab and field data collections), including occasional night and weekend hours.

Travel:

May travel CONUS or OCONUS to conduct RDT&E, attend working groups meetings, training, workshops, conferences or other relevant meetings. Expectation of multiple data collections per year.

Driving Requirement:

Potential for travel, when required employee will need to complete an MVR check. Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the company’s automobile insurance policy. Driving may be required when traveling and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 15%.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in an office and /or laboratory setting. Laboratory environment includes human testing, so exposure may include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals, fumes, vapors, communicable diseases, etc. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.

Physical Demands:

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, lying down or to be or remain in a position or state of inactivity. Lift and carry 50 lbs. individually and as a part of a team lift and carry operation; use hand tools to assemble and disassemble equipment, instrumentation, and test devices; climb and descend equipment, test devices, military vehicles, steps, or ladders.
