Description of Work Unit

The Colorado State Forest Service provides technical forestry assistance, urban forestry technical guidance, wildfire mitigation expertise, and outreach and education to help landowners and communities achieve their forest management goals. The Communications and Communities Division works collaboratively with other CSFS staff and many partners to provide outreach and education to landowners, organizations and communities throughout Colorado and supports and enhances the outreach efforts of CSFS forestry professionals throughout the state. The division also provides administration and oversight of urban and community forestry management programs that directly contribute to the agency’s mission of “the stewardship of Colorado’s diverse forest environments for the benefit of present and future generations”.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Urban and Community Forestry ( UCF ) Program Manager, both positions are responsible for providing community forestry assistance and programs to field offices, partners and communities throughout the Front Range or eastern plains of Colorado, integrated with the agency’s broader program of work. The UCF Program Specialists are expected to demonstrate exceptional technical proficiency in urban forestry practices and community engagement.

Both positions operate out of the CSU Spur campus office of the CSFS in Denver, with the potential for flexible work arrangements, including remote work. Candidates must be able to travel to locations throughout the Front Range of Colorado or eastern Colorado and occasionally to CSFS offices in Fort Collins and other parts of the state for meetings and trainings.

The UCF Program Specialists are responsible for delivering urban and community forestry programs and providing technical expertise and support to CSFS field offices and partners throughout Colorado’s Front Range or eastern Colorado. For the Front Range, this geography includes the most populated urban centers in Colorado, from the Colorado-Wyoming border in the north through the Denver area to Pueblo, Colorado, in the south. The UCF Specialist for the Front Range is also responsible for administering CSFS programming at CSU Spur and leading the team of partners at the Community Forestry Hub on the Spur campus. For eastern Colorado, this geography includes the numerous cities and towns on the eastern plains of Colorado. The UCF Specialist for eastern Colorado also serves communities east of the Continental Divide that are south of Pueblo, but its service area does not include the San Luis Valley.

Ongoing duties of both positions include assisting with community forestry projects (tree planting, inventory, canopy assessment, risk assessment, etc.), conducting trainings and workshops with professionals and community members, meeting with city councils and county governments as an advocate for community forestry, coordinating and participating in regional and national community forestry forums, attending and speaking at conferences, administering grants and contracts, supporting the Colorado Tree Coalition and administering Arbor Day Foundation recognition programs such as Tree City USA . Both positions support key working relationships with federal, state, college, municipal and nonprofit partners. Some examples are the United States Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, CSU College of Agricultural Sciences, CSU Extension, CSU Spur and the International Society of Arboriculture.

Both positions will also work with disproportionately impacted communities to help organize urban forestry projects with neighborhood groups, nonprofits, municipal governments and other regional organizations to utilize federal grants for tree planting and other urban forestry projects in historically disadvantaged areas.

Both positions require proficiency in program delivery including but not limited to: recording accomplishments, completing required reports, meeting deadlines, managing grants and budgets, and supporting field operations. The UCF Program Specialists must be proactive in program development; assist others in achieving program accomplishments and communications; forecast program needs; be aware of significant changes in relevant research and best practices; and effectively share new knowledge and information with staff, partners and cooperators. The UCF Program Specialists will serve as CSFS representatives and advocates for forest management and change consistent with the agency’s mission and strategic priorities.

Daily activities include assisting CSFS field offices with program implementation and coordination, maintaining relationships with key partners, conducting workshops, writing and administering grants and contracts, writing reports, providing direction to arboriculture and urban forestry professionals and assisting the UCF Program Manager and Associate Director of Communications and Communities with other special projects as they arise.

Applicants are expected to possess demonstrated knowledge of and relevant ability with culturally diverse communities among potential target and constituent populations.
