Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

A Restoration Technician position is available at Beale Air Force Base ( AFB ), California with Colorado State University ( CSU ) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). The position will provide field and technical assistances to the Beale AFB natural resource program including preparing, planting, and maintaining restoration sites, maintaining greenhouse operations, and helping manage invasive species. In addition, the position will support other natural resource program support activities including data collection, wildlife surveys, construction monitoring, and helping with the implementation of a variety of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan ( INRMP ) for the installation.

Beale AFB is an approximately 23,000-acre installation located in Yuba County, California. The base is located east of Marysville and Yuba City, about 40 miles north of Sacramento in the rolling hills of northern California.

Required Job Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in wildlife biology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or closely related field

  • Experience with surveying and monitoring impacts of construction activities on land and wildlife resources

  • Experience in land rehabilitation/vegetation restoration

  • Knowledge of flora and fauna of Northern California

  • Experience with ArcGIS, including map creation

  • Ability to walk long distances on varying terrain in extreme weather conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds repeatedly without assistance.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience working on military lands

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

  • Knowledge of and experience with Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans

  • Ability to operate and maintain 4-wheel-drive vehicles, ATVs, and power equipment

  • Experience with environmental education of the general public

  • Thorough knowledge of state, federal and safety laws regarding construction and endangered species

Job Duty CategoryBiological and Natural Resources Support

Duty/Responsibility

Support Beale AFB in biological and natural resources by:

  • Plan and implement riparian restoration projects; perform monitoring and maintenance of riparian planting sites and other vegetation planting sites throughout the base

  • Enhance habitat, especially breeding, nesting, and brooding conditions, at base impoundments and creeks for waterfowl, game birds, and other species where it does not conflict with Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard ( BASH ) concerns

  • Install, replace, maintain, and monitor fish and wildlife enhancement/habitat structures (e.g., wood duck boxes, quail roosts, dove nesting cones, fish ladder, raptor perches, bat boxes, artificial owl burrows/boxes and kestrel boxes)

  • Aid in site visits, meetings, reviews, coordination, and inspections of Base Civil Engineering Work Clearance Request (AF Form 103) processes

  • Coordinate daily activities and reports with the Natural Resource manager and other CEMML staff

  • Assist other biologists with wildlife surveys

  • Collect field data, contribute to reports

  • Review literature

Support the natural resource compliance of construction areas at Beale AFB . Duties will consist of:

  • Tracking and reporting construction activities

  • Quality assurance

  • Documentation of compliance/non-compliance with resource protection measures

  • Photo documenting site conditions

  • Coordinating with military personnel and other relevant parties

  • Design and conduct site-specific species surveys in support of proposed activities
