In addition to its prominent international profile in the study of literature and the environment, the UO English department has growing strengths in comparative ethnic literature in the US and the study of race and ethnicity alongside ongoing commitments to the study of empire and decolonial strategies and experiences.

The University of Oregon, situated on the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya people, is one of only two Pacific Northwest members of the Association of American Universities and holds the distinction of a “very high research activity” ranking in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The UO is located in Eugene, a vibrant city of 157,000 with a wide range of cultural and culinary offerings, a pleasant climate, and a community engaged in environmental and social concerns. Position Summary

The University of Oregon’s English Department invites applications for a 1-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in African American Literatures and Cultural Productions during the 2024-2025 academic year. This position will place African American Literatures and Cultural Production at the center of their research and teaching agendas, including all topics, periods, and context in this area.

Fellows will teach 4 courses during that 1-year period (the University of Oregon is on the term system, so this would usually equate to a 0-2-2 load). These courses will be developed and scheduled in consultation with the Associate Head of English.

The fellow will make a research presentation to the English Department and other interested scholars. Further contributions may include offering a workshop for graduate students in the fellow's field of specialization or participation in student/faculty reading groups during their appointment. The fellow will work on campus in the Department of English and offer mentorship to graduate students. In addition, the fellow will be mentored by a designated senior faculty member.

We particularly welcome applications from scholars whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion, who have been historically marginalized and currently underrepresented in higher education, and who will enhance the English Department's existing strengths in the study of African American Literatures and Cultural Productions.

Minimum Requirements

• PhD in English, Folklore, Media Studies, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Cinema Studies, or a related field in hand at time of appointment.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated pedagogical and scholarly record in the study of race and ethnicity.
