Job Description

The Instrumentation and Controls Technician safely and efficiently within their scope of expertise installs, maintains, troubleshoots, services and calibrates the various instruments within the Anaerobic Digester (ADF) facility and any other contracted facilities in the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC). The Incumbent follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements while achieving target KPIs. KPIs include safety, productivity, and quality of work performed. The Instrumentation and Controls Technician may be requested to mentor and train an assigned Apprentice(s) as well as oversee work performance of any Maintenance Technician(s) assisting with a work order or assist other tradespeople in the performance of their work. Incumbent is required to perform On-Call duties as scheduled and may be required to work rotating day shifts. The Instrumentation and Controls Technician is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities.

This position operates within a COR certified plant environment (which is a requirement of our Contract) and is required to comply with all regulatory requirements including the Client's operating approval with Alberta Environment. The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understands and promotes the Company's, the Division's, the Plant's, and the Department's mission statement, values, and strategic goals.

  • Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company's, Client's and Regulatory Agencies' safe work objectives and requirements.

  • Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other company departments, staff, and client representatives. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.

  • Promotes a quality first work ethic and attitude to provide a service of the highest standard achievable.

  • Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.

  • Understands, complies with, and is accountable for adherence to COR quality standards in all activities.

  • Safely operates company owned, leased, managed, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment . Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities.

  • Manages assigned tasks/projects within scope of responsibility so all KPIs are achieved, including but not limited to safety, productivity, and product quality. KPIs will be measured by:

  • Key Performance Indicators:

  • Safety: Lost Time Accidents, Incidents, PPE Compliance, Permit Compliance

  • Quality Control: Re-work, Quality of work

  • Work Order Hours: Estimated Time vs Actual Time

  • Productivity: Total Work Hours vs Actual Work Hour

  • Maintains plant instruments and their controls including Level, D/P, Flow, gas analyzers, Belt scales, and fixed gas sensors.

  • Keeps instruments, sensors and scales calibrated and functioning within the set parameters.

  • Troubleshoots plant instrumentation and repairs as necessary.

  • When called upon, be able to offer technical insight for an upgrade or project as needed.

  • As assigned, carries out regular PMs on the above mentioned instrumentation.

  • Works assigned shifts as scheduled. May be required to work authorized overtime to maintain facility production.

  • Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.

  • Understands and is accountable for responsibilities as Instrumentation and Controls Technician as described in Sections 2-2 and 3-2 of the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Edmonton Composting Facility Safety manual, H&S Management System documentation and other relevant policies.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Talents:

  • Apprenticeship Certification and/or an inter-provincial Journeyman Instrumentation and Controls TechnicianTrade Certificate.

  • Dual ticketed individuals with secondary trade certificate as electrician will be preferred.

  • Minimum of two 2 years' related-industry experience and completion of apprenticeship certification.

  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) is a definite asset.

  • Previous experience in an industrial process plant environment is an asset.

  • Strong customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.

  • Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.

  • Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills.

  • Intermediate-level computer skills to operate MS Office Suite (especially Outlook, Excel, and Word).

  • Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts and perform On-Call duties as scheduled.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.

  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including negative alcohol and drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver's license, pre-employment medical, immunizations, and background check.

Work Environment:

  • Physical or mental demands and activities:

  • Incumbent performs Safety Sensitive duties or responsibilities.

  • Achieving expected performance standards while maintaining an efficient and safe working environment.

  • High volume workload requiring both sound technical knowledge and ability to provide exceptional customer service.

  • Challenging conditions normally associated with job (e.g. physical hazards, rotating shifts, shop conditions, excessive travel as an integral part of the duties performed, etc.) It is assumed that all reasonable and legal Occupational Health & Safety practices are in place and are adhered to. In addition, PPE is to be worn as per company standards and procedures. Refer to the safety section and safe work plan sections of procedures for specific information. Refer to the position's Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the correlation or activity, risk, and controls

  • Works directly in Plant; required to climb ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, chemicals, process gases, bloodborne and other pathogens.

  • Required to wear respirator while in the Plant.

  • Exposed to compressed/flammable gas, mobile equipment, moving equipment, rotating equipment and electrical hazards.

  • Exposed to hot and cold working environments.

  • Required to do heavy lifting and carrying.

  • Required to perform On-Call duties as scheduled.

Working Hours:

Permanent position, offered on a full-time basis, where the working schedules are as followed:

  • Regular hours of work for the Instrumentation and Controls Technician is based on a 40 hour work week. These hours may include evenings, nights, and weekends. A 30-minute unpaid lunch break and two 15-minute paid rest breaks are provided for each shift. Hours of work reflect operational and business needs and will be provided with a notice of work times in accordance with the Alberta Employment Standards code. Incumbent is required to perform On-Call Duties as scheduled and may be required to work pre-authorized overtime.
