Lab Manager
Position Summary
Fisheries and Wildlife seeks a lab manager who will culture and maintain sea lamprey and zebrafish, conduct research, maintain related records, licenses, supplies and equipment, and coordinate visits and experiments of collaborators.
Primary responsibility is maintaining and managing zebrafish and sea lamprey colonies and facility, including 1) culturing sea lamprey and zebrafish through life history, 2) maintaining and managing space, equipment, and supplies used for fish rearing and research, 3) maintaining compliance and records for lab safety and animal welfare, 4) performing research related to gene editing and other projects, 5) coordinating research activities in the fish lab including visits and experiments of collaborators.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Desired Qualifications
B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife, Zoology, or a related field; experience managing a research fish colony, including breeding and careing for fish, maintaining water treatment systems, training and supervising assistants in fish care, and purchasing supplies; experience supporting gene editing research in fish, including maintaining various lines of edited and wildtype lines, collecting and analyzing samples for genotyping, and screening live edited fish for fluorescence using microscopy; experience recording and analyzing fish behavior; experience working with sea lamprey and zebrafish; willingness and ability to perform duties on some weekends and holidays.
