Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Companion Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will join our dynamic small animal surgery team, that includes 3 board-certified Soft Tissue surgeons, 4 board certified orthopedic surgeons, 6 ACVS residents, and 9 service-dedicated veterinary nurses. The Soft Tissue Surgery service has 3 dedicated operating rooms and advanced digital preoperative planning and intraoperative capabilities. A new state-of-the art wound management suite was customized for the Soft Tissue Surgery team. The Soft Tissue Surgery service's minimally invasive surgery program is supported by 3 intra-operative fluoroscopy units, a radiolucent 6-axis operating table, a NIR/ICG STORZ tower, and a comprehensive array of dedicated instrumentation. 

The Soft Tissue Surgery faculty work collaboratively with all other clinical services including Anesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care, Oncology (Medical and Radiation), Internal Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Behavior, Rehabilitation, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, and Primary Care services.   

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises over 40 faculty providing outstanding patient care with a superb team of highly qualified veterinary nurses. Our teaching hospital, the Veterinary Medical Center, is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities including 10 operating suites, operating microscope, minimally invasive laparoscopy/thoracoscopy, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, intra-operative C-arm, 1.5 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, linear accelerator, video endoscopy, renal replacement therapy, and ventilator support. 

The Soft Tissue Surgery service is an active program with a varied caseload and experienced faculty. The successful candidate's responsibilities will include management of referral and internal Soft Tissue Surgery cases, clinical instruction of house officers and students including on-call cases after hours, participation in didactic pre-clinical teaching, and committee assignments. Assignments of clinical service, teaching, and scholarly activity are negotiable with the Department Chairperson. Annual merit evaluations, and promotions are based on the faculty member's performance within these assignments.

The role of the successful applicant will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared towards the interests, strengths, and qualifications of the applicant. Tenure system appointments require a greater percentage of time dedicated to both independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University and are predicated on the need to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services and clinical research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize clinical service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity.
