Workdays/Hours: Shifts vary with two weekdays and one weekend day each week.

Position assists in the operation and historical interpretation of West Point on the Eno and Leigh Farm Parks, as well as other cultural resources maintained by the City of Durham Parks and Recreation department. Incumbent leads recreational programming and activities, conducts research, provides staff training, and coordinates mill maintenance and supplies. Work schedule includes weekends and flexibility for special events, both on and off-site.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Plans and prepares monthly history hike programs by researching topics, organizing research material in written form, and determining hike routes.

  • Leads history hikes and leads or assists with a variety of educational and cultural heritage programs (seasonal foraging hikes, Kid’s Life programs, Drop a Line fishing programs, etc.) for individuals and groups.

  • Conducts park tours and explains the historic and cultural significance of assigned buildings or displays housed therein.

  • Assists in preparing for the administrative needs of programs, the West Point Mill, and/or other historical interpretive tasks.

  • Uses Active.Net software to assist in processing participant registrations and payments, preparing deposit records, preparing reports and maintaining records of operational functions as needed.

  • Assists in maintaining activity and attendance records.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training programs, orientation, and evaluation sessions.

  • Conducts research related to cultural heritage sites and the general history of the area.

  • Provides hands-on instruction to Historic Mill Interpreters and other staff on the operation of the West Point Mill.

  • Conducts mill interpretation for the public on weekends and for groups during the week.

  • Provides customer service by operating the country store at West Point Mill and generally by interacting with patrons in the park.

  • Conducts minor mill maintenance such as greasing, repairs to machinery, and maintaining supplies.

  • Cleans the mill machinery after grinding and general cleaning such as sweeping, vacuuming, and dusting.

  • Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of program participants and renders first aid increase of minor injury.

  • Assists with supervising volunteers for special projects, events and programs.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    -In depth knowledge of history, particularly local history.

    -Basic safety principles for operating machinery.

    SKILLED IN:

    -Imparting information verbally to individuals or groups.

    -Discussing complex topics in an informed and thoughtful manner.

    -Clear and precise communication.

    -Drafting written materials such as for research or projects.

    -Presenting to participants of varying age groups and knowledge levels. § Conducting historical research.

    -Maintaining records and preparing reports.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma,GED, HiSet, TASC;

  • One (1) year of experience in public speaking or customer service;

  • Three (3 ) months of experience in museum interpretation, educational programming, historical research, or completed college coursework in American history;

  • A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience with assessing supply needs and making order requests (I.e. tools, food items, office materials, etc.).

  • Experience creating and/or leading educational programming for youth, teens, or adults (i.e. story times, crafts, workshops, demonstrations, walking tours, etc.).

  • Comfortable working outside in all seasons.
