Mead & Hunt, Inc., a nationally recognized professional services consulting firm, has an opportunity available for a Biologist/Wetland Ecologist/Permitting Specialist to join our aviation group. This opportunity is available in the following locations: Minneapolis, MN; Middleton, WI; Wauwatosa, WI; De Pere, WI; La Crosse, WI; Chicago, IL; Lansing, MI; Indianapolis, IN; Columbus, OH; Cincinnati, OH; Detroit, MI. POSITION PURPOSE: To conduct and support environmental studies for transportation infrastructure projects, including fieldwork to collect and document information on vegetation, soils, and other environmental resources. A willingness to travel extensively and work long hours during the field season is required for this position. This position requires travel, overnight stays, and evening or weekend work as assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Serves as principal investigator for ecological fieldwork activities on transportation infrastructure projects. Identifies, evaluates, and documents environmental data on plant and animal species and habitats. Prepares technical reports documenting ecological research and field surveys. Conducts independent research and obtains and interprets information from outside sources. Identifies required ecological impact mitigation and develops mitigation strategies and plans. Completes federal, state, and local permit applications related to wetlands, floodplains, public waters, listed species, and other environmental resources. Coordinates jurisdictional determinations and 401/404 permit applications with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and relevant state agencies. Prepares or directs preparation of geographic information systems (GIS) maps depicting environmental survey data. Responsible for schedules, work-in progress, and timely completion of specific tasks. May attend client meetings - days or nights. REQUIRED & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's or Master's degree in ecology, biology, botany, soil science, natural resources, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. One to three years of relevant job experience. Ability to apply research to evaluation of field conditions is required. Familiarity with flora of the upper Midwest and ability to identify plant and animal species is required. Completion of basic wetland delineation coursework is required. Strong technical writing skills are required. Knowledge of the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other applicable federal and state regulations is required. Experience with soil taxonomy and wetlands ecology is preferred. Experience with GIS software and GPS field collection techniques is preferred. Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) and/or Wisconsin Assured Delineator certification is preferred. Familiarity with rapid assessment techniques and/or habitat assessment is preferred.
