Eversource Energy Electric Utility Substation Mechanic Apprentice in Dorchester, Massachusetts

As an Electric Utility Substation Mechanic Apprentice,employees are engaged in an on-the-job training program designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform all required operations and maintenance activities within substations, network stations, subsurface and indoor vaults as well as customer substations.

The employee will perform all phases of substation operations and maintenance on 345kv, 115kV, 23kV, 13.8kV and 4kV electrical equipment as well as DC control systems, including but not limited to: oil sampling, maintenance of SF6 systems and electrical testing. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on the following: LTCs, breakers, reactors, transformers, and capacitor banks. Maintain substation logs and equipment records while also performing maintenance of substations yards. Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, read and understand schematics, electrical one line and control wiring diagrams, etc.

Perform switching and tagging on equipment at all voltages as directed by the system operator or supervisors in accordance with established Eversource standards.

Perform monthly inspections and gather all necessary data for the generation of reports and updating records. Make repairs and corrections on any abnormal findings.

Assist in the performance of various tests with Field Engineers such as contact resistance, insulation resistance (megger), power factor tests (Doble), winding resistance, TTR, high potential (hi-pot), dielectric of oil, SF6 tests (moisture, SO2, purity), breaker timing, battery load and infrared thermography (FLIR).

Under close directive or general supervision, incumbents use appropriate hand and power tools to perform tasks in connection with the operations, maintenance, repair, overhaul, installation, construction and inspection of electrical and mechanical equipment and apparatus, without limitation to the operating voltage.

The incumbent performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations for the purpose of learning standard work methods and to develop work knowledge, skills, and abilities. For training and development purposes, assignments will include work of the fully qualified Operating Mechanic position.

It is required that incumbents progress to the position of a fully qualified Operating Mechanic. To progress to the journey level position, the incumbent must satisfactorily meet the requirements of the apprentice program, including passing periodic evaluations and exams as set forth in the program.

Starting Rate of Pay: $34.96 per hour.Over a three-year apprenticeship program, you will receive pay increases at every qualifying level until you reach the journeyman level. Current schedule of pay rates are:$34.96 – 38.12 – 40.98 – 43.14 – 45.13 – 47.80 – 50.90 – 53.77. There will be eight qualifying exams throughout the apprenticeship program. You must pass each exam to progress to the next pay level and remain in the program.

This is a 3-year Apprenticeship program. There will be qualifying exams throughout the program which you will be required to pass to continue in the program.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons and at times for extended periods.
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights up to 60 feet.
  • Shifts are required.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Must have two years of electrical or mechanical operations experience gained through work experience and/or a combination of work experience and technical education.
  • Must have corrective vision, normal color perception, hearing and sense of smell.
  • Must possess and maintain avaliddriver’s license to operate motor vehicles and have asatisfactorydriving record.
  • Must possess or be willing and able to obtain the appropriate Massachusetts license and Company qualification to operate motor vehicles of any class and type required by the Company based on departmental needs.
  • Must possess an aptitude for operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Must pass Company approved EEI testing (CAST Test). An EEI Test (CAST Test) practice test is available by visiting: https://jobs.eversource.com/eeo . In addition, candidates must successfully complete a physical aptitude exam which will include tool identification, tasks relating to fuses/wiring, and lifting/carrying a weighted object.
  • High School education or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Candidates who have successfully completed an Eversource sponsored training program will be given preference.
  • Preference for candidates residing within 45 minutes of work location.
